If ‘pregnancy robots’ were real, would you use one?


A viral story has spread in tabloids this week, proclaiming that a CEO of a technological company in China was developing a “pregnancy robot”. A bot prototype would be ready by next year, projected the CEO and would be designed to maintain a human pregnancy from design to birth, about 10 months.
The robot and the related story were – as you may have guessed – pure fiction. But the viral tale has nevertheless raised questions on the question of whether the design of such a robot could be possible with today’s technology and what ethical dilemmas that the possibility could raise, in turn.
