12 Broken Ceasefires in 2014; Hadar Goldin’s Body Still Held After 11 Years; Peace with Hamas Unlikely – RedState

Yesterday, Becca Lower offered a clear and well reported account of the latest updates concerning Trump’s peace plan. However, despite the comments of Netanyahu and Trump, the facts surrounding the Hamas file clearly indicate that Israel and Hamas are probably not on the verge of a lasting peace agreement.

Today marks the 4,084th day that Hamas has the remains of the soldier of Tdi Hadar Goldin. You will find below the background details of Goldin’s abduction by Hamas in 2014 and the reasons why Hamas will not be up to the Trump Peace Agreement.

Operation protection edge

On June 12, 2014, the terrorists of Hamas Amer Abu Aysha and Marwan Kawasme kidnapped the teenagers Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Fraenkel and Gil-Ad Shaar near the Israeli city of Geva’ot in the West Bank. Yifrach was nineteen, and Fraenkel and Shaar were both sixteen. In 2014, Geva’ot was a small town with only ten families. Geva’ot is about ten miles southwest of Jerusalem.

In response to the kidnapping, the IDF launched Operation Brother’s Keeper to find the three kidnapped Israelis. The TSAhal operation led to the arrest of around 600 Hamas terrorists in the West Bank. Shortly after the start of the goalkeeper of Operation Brother, Hamas began to launch daily rockets from Gaza in Israel. On June 30, the Israeli authorities discovered the bodies of the three adolescents in a field near the Arab city of the Halhul West Bank. Between June 12 and July 8, the FDI estimated that Hamas had launched 250 rockets in Israel.

On July 8, 2014, Netanyahu was enough, and the IDF launched the Protective EDGE operation, otherwise known as Gaza War 2014. (Yes, Netanyahu was Prime Minister in 2014.) From July 8 to July 18, the FDI began an aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip, targeting the infrastructures of Hamas, rocket launchers and tunnels. Hamas has tried to infiltrate Israel via tunnels which have passed under the fence of Gaza and via the Mediterranean by the Naval Commandos of Hamas. The FDI has foiled these attempts. During the air bombing, Hamas accepted and failed to keep three distinct ceasefire agreements.

On July 18, the FDI invaded the Gaza Strip with infantry and armored divisions to find and destroy Hamas tunnels. During the first 48 hours, the FDIs discovered and destroyed 30 tunnels, ten of which ran under the fence of Gaza in Israel. The FDIs discovered weapons of Hamas stored in a UNRWA school, and Hamas terrorists were seen shooting Israeli hospitals.

On August 1, Hamas accepted a 72-hour ceasefire with Israel. Ninety minutes after the start of the ceasefire, Hamas terrorists came out of a tunnel on the Israeli side of the border and set an ambush to the TDI soldiers. During the ambush, Hamas terrorists killed three TSAhal infantry soldiers from the Givati brigade. One of these soldiers was Hadar Goldin, twenty-three years old. Hamas terrorists dragged Goldin’s body into the tunnels and kept its leftovers in Gaza to the present day. Despite repeated attempts by the Israeli government to negotiate the return of the Goldin body, Hamas refuses to do so.

The broken fuel ceasefire on August 1 was one of the nine ceasefires that Hamas accepted and then broke during the land phase of the war. In total, Hamas accepted and broke twelve different ceasefire agreements during the operation of the operation. After the end of the war on September 23, Shin Bet, the Israel national police, found the two Hamas terrorists who had removed the three adolescents. The terrorists resisted the arrest, and after a brief shooting, they were killed by Shin Bet. For those who wish to read a very detailed report on the operations protection edge, click here.

Israel’s ingenuity was one of the rare positive points to get out of Hamas’ tunnels under the Israel-Gaza border. Israel has designed and built a very classified underground barrier around the entire border of Israel-Gaza. The barrier alerts the FDI that a tunnel is dug long before reaching the underground barrier and gives the FDI time to destroy it. The construction of the underground barrier began in 2017 and was completed in 2021. Since the completion of the underground barrier, Hamas has not been able to dig a tunnel in Israel from Gaza.

Current negotiations

Israel sent the following officials to Egypt to start talks on Monday:

  • Ron Dermer, Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs;
  • Gal Hirsch, brigadier retired from the general brigadier and coordinator appointed by the government for negotiations for captives and disappeared;
  • Ophir Falk, advisor in foreign policy;
  • A senior head of the Bet of Shin Bet;
  • A senior Mossad official;
  • Additional Shin Bet, Mossad and TSAhal staff.

Egyptian talks are supposed to focus on the release of all Israeli hostages within 72 hours. According to Ynetnews, Az al-Din Haddad, head of the Hamas military wing, insists that the 72-hour period is impossible and that the twenty provisions of the plan must be negotiated simultaneously. Haddad says Hamas has lost contact with some of the terrorists holding hostages and needs time to locate them.

Haddad refuses that Hamas will abandon its weapons. According to sources, Haddad says that he could be willing to store “offensive weapons” in Egypt or under the UN supervision, but Hamas refuses to abandon his light weapons. If Hamas was authorized to “store” its rockets and other “offensive” weapons in Egypt, it would just be a matter of time before Hamas built new tunnels and introduced them to Gaza. In addition, UNRWA is essentially a subordinate from Hamas, so letting an UNRWA take care of arms would mean that Hamas would maintain its access to them.

Haddad rejects any Arab foreign or international administration and refuses to accept any presence of FDI in Gaza. Haddad hesitated to allow the transfer of civil governance to a non -partisan Palestinian technocratic body supported by the Arab states. However, Haddad insists that Hamas will retain its political influence in Gaza.

For anyone knowing the history of Hamas, there is more chance of winning the lottery without buying a ticket than Hamas which both publishes all hostages and respects all the terms of the peace agreement.

The Hamas terrorist organization is a delay tactics expert. Since Trump has forced Israel to unilaterally stop his offensive operations in Gaza, Hamas will use talks to delay as long as possible to allow him to come together and rebuild his tunnels and defenses.

Hamas has agreed to release all hostages as a delay tactic and flatter Trump’s ego. At best, Hamas will publish most hostages, but there will be hostages that Hamas claims that it cannot locate. What remains to be seen is how much Trump really wants a Nobel Peace Prize and how long it will allow Hamas to block talks. The other question is how much patience Netanyahu has before ordering the FDIs to finish work.

It is likely that Trump realizes that Hamas will never follow the terms of the peace agreement. It is even more likely that Trump convinced Netanyahu than the peace plan offers the biggest chance of recovering some of the hostages. Trump probably thinks that when Hamas does not respect the terms of the peace agreement, the whole world will have the back of Israel in his efforts to finish Hamas.

However, if Trump believes it, then he’s wrong. When it becomes obvious that Hamas will not accept the peace agreement and that the FDIs will resume war, Hamas will yell at the roofs, “we have agreed to publish all the hostages and Israel failed to be up to the agreement”, and then as always, the international media will spread well and countries like Canada, Australia, France and the United Kingdom call for recognition of a statement of Palestinians.
