150 Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driver’s license examiners graduated Wednesday at Nash Community College.

Gov. Josh Stein and DMV Commissioner Paul Tine hosted the class, and the agency hopes additional staff will reduce lines and wait times at DMV offices across the state.

“It’s a special calling,” Stein said. “Like many other roles in state government, you don’t feel appreciated enough every day. People don’t always have a happy experience when dealing with their government, but the work you do is essential to North Carolina.”

The newly trained examiners will be deployed to offices across North Carolina, assisting with obtaining driver’s licenses, identification cards and other services. Officials say they plan to continue investing in training and hiring to meet demand and improve customer service across the state.

Tine recently presented a detailed 35-page strategic plan aimed at transforming the DMV experience, with full implementation planned by the end of 2030. The DMV says increased staffing could mean shorter lines, faster service and a more efficient experience for residents, especially during peak hours.
