17 fascinating images from the 2025 Shark Photographer of the Year awards

“A memorable experience, among the best meetings of large animals I have had.” This is how photographer Byron Conway described his appointment with silky sharks off the coast of Cuba. Conway used a slow shutter speed to capture a little natural movement while sea creatures were swimming near the surface of the water. The resulting image (above views) won home honors in the “Oceanic program” category of the prices of sharks of the year 2025.
On July 14 marks the shark awareness day and to celebrate, Shark Trust announced the captivating winners of this year’s competition. More than 1,200 species of sharks and rays sail on earth waters, but animals are faced with growing challenges in overfishing, climate change and loss of habitat.

Julian Hébetreit launched the price and title of shark photographer of the year for a beautiful photograph (view above) of an Indo-Pacific Leopardshark, also known as Zebra Shark
“This photograph is at first sight quite simple, but with a depth which rewards the repeated views. The golden shape of the Indo-Pacific Leopardshark is in bright contrast with dark rock and white sand. Place it small in the frame creates a feeling of drama rather than distance. The young shark photographer of the year 2025 was awarded to Panitbhand Paribatra Na Ayudhya for his image of a whale shark feeding on the surface. He said, “I was very excited to see with my own eyes the greatest fish in the world feeding on some of the smallest living creatures in the ocean. “The blue Sharks were daring and curious, and we, four divers, we had a lot of good interactions with them, but I particularly like the interaction in this image. It is tempting to imagine that the shark asks the photographer” Do you have my best side? “”
