EXPERT OPINION

ESPN’s Sam Tighe examines Man United’s links to Hayden Hackney and Murillo.

It was only a matter of time before Hackney were linked with Carrick’s Manchester United. After all, the 23-year-old has become Middlesbrough’s key midfielder during their time at the club between 2022 and 2025; and Hackney admitted he was “gutted” when Carrick was relieved of his duties on Teesside last summer.

Under the tutelage of experts, Hackney has become perhaps the best midfield player in England’s second tier. He ranks in the 96th percentile for progressive passes and the 99th percentile for progressive carries in Europe this season. It should be noted that the rise to Premier League level is significant, however.

Murillo de Forest is obviously much more experienced at this level. A powerful central defender, he has iron shoulders, immense recovery pace and, more subtly, a beautiful long-range pass on him. The Brazil international is tied for second most last-man tackles (5) and has the third-most clearances on the line (4) since the start of last season, highlighting his natural defensive instincts.

If there’s a downside to point out, it’s that there have often been concerns about his fitness over the past year. He hasn’t missed many teams on matchdays, but his availability has often been questioned.
