2025 Heisman Trophy odds, Week 2 outlook: Garrett Nussmeier leads race early, John Mateer faces tall task

The expectations for Arch Manning were launched by the sky that entered its first season as a quarter-rear from Texas, but like most beginners for the first week of week 1, the former leading recruit fought through significant growth pain. The favorite of the pre-season Heisman Trophy suddenly has lots of soil to catch up after having given way to the levy status at Garrett Nussmeier de Lsu.
These stars of the top 10 games were far from being the only hopeful hopes to make statements, for the best or for the worst, in the opening week in university football. The highest individual race for sport in sport could not be more open with so many season to play, but each game has, and each data point has long -term implications in the process of determining the trophy in December.
The next week 2 Slate is much lighter on marquee clashes, but that does not mean that the next batch of games is unimportant to define the route of glory. Heisman’s strongest contenders go beyond their opponent, and a lot of hopes for this year have the opportunity to make their statistics heard against the lower enemies.

Stock up: Nussmeier the favorite precocious
He did not have much to climb since he opened the year with the two best ratings of Heisman, but Nussmeier made this modest jump in the first pole for the price with his winning effort in one of the biggest clashes of week 1. A pass of 8 yards touched at Trey’dez Green.
Nussmeier has entered the Tigers VS Tigers shock with equality with Cade Klubnik de Clemson on the sideboard and gained a significant separation of him with a significantly better performance. Stacking the victories classified as this not only would keep the potential choice of first round in front of the Heisman pack, but he would finally have cement LSU as a real candidate in the national championship in the 4th year of the Brian Kelly era.
The first steps of the season allow big jumps in the dimension table, and it was a good week to be a victorious quarter. UTAH dazzled in a rout of the UCLA, and Devon Dampier Double Transfer à double threat looked at the part of a quarter who could lead his team to a Big 12 title. He missed only four times on 25 pass attempts, ran 87 yards and found the goals three times – twice in the air and once on the ground. The market loved what he had seen. Dampier’s Heisman ratings improved from +5,000 to +2,500 in terms of a single match.
Dampier was the most dramatic rising column, but a multitude of other quarters have also gave up with recognition. The Georgia Stockton shooter passed for two affected and ran for two others to become the second Halto-Streest behind Dampier. John Mateer, Carson Beck and Jackson Arnold were all up to their overhaul in their respective schools. Lanorris sellers looked like a certified playmaker for Southern Carolina. And the Dante Moore era is disabled in Oregon in style.
Stock Down: The defensive battle hurts Manning, Ohio State
Manning’s media threshing has decreased quickly. He and the Texas offensive are far, far from being a lost cause, however. A bad match against what could very well be the best defense of university football should not be a massive concern, especially because it came on the road during the first outing of Manning as a full -time starter. His bad timings and the reversals of the head and his under-integration do not have to define his season.
On the other side of this test of force n ° 1 against n ° 3, it was not as if the individual stars of Ohio State had either taken up hot start. Julian Sayin looked very much like a first -year student in a red shirt making his first beginning of a career against an equally formidable defense, and for the second time in as many years, Jeremiah Smith was only a modest factor against the Longhorns. None of the two reinforced their Heisman candidacy despite what was a result of the Gargantuan team.
Heisman voters will also want to see more Cade Klubnik the rest of the year. Although he seemed at the end of the 2024 season at the end of the stretch to appease concerns surrounding his performance against the higher competition, he won during his first 2025 test. The 50% completion rate and the interception he recorded against LSU recalled his difficulties against Georgia a year ago and Notre Dame the previous season.

Performances of week 2 to watch
Last week was a treat with its herd of top 25 games. Week 2 is, uh, a little lighter on the large -scale events. Michigan n ° 15 and Oklahoma n ° 18 will occupy the front of the stage in a game which has important Heisman implications.
John Mateer against Michigan
Okay, John Mateer, you have torn a defense of the FCS in tatters. Now show us what you have against all-powerful Michigan. Mateer’s beginnings in Oklahoma were historic. He set the school record for most of the yards by the pass during the beginnings with 392 against the Illinois State to go with three touchdown, 24 yards on the ground and another score on the ground. But imminent wolverines are about as different from a beast as in university football. This is exactly the kind of game in which Brent Venables brought Mateer from Washington’s state, and it is precisely the type of all-oeyes-sur-opportunity opportunity he needs to make a statement before Heisman voters.
Dante Moore against Oklahoma State
Dante Moore’s last start against an opponent Power Four arrived in November 2023, and he launched two interceptions in this match. This week will show the growth it has made during his development year in Oregon. Another good outing to open his passage with the Ducks would be a solid first step to prove that he is a player different from the one who started his career at the UCLA as a disappointing five -star recruit. Oklahoma State is a beautiful soft defense to help him mitigate the action of power.
Sam Leavitt against the state of Mississippi
The state of Arizona heads towards SC Country for the second stage of a home house with the state of the Mississippi – the only opponent who really had the number of Sam Leavitt in 2024. The Bulldogs were the only team to maintain the star in small groups at less than 150 yards and one of the three to keep it out of the goal area. Now, he has established a career in career with two scores precipitated in victory, but 69 yards by the pass against the state of Mississippi? That Mississippi state? The fashionable Heisman Dark Horse needs better effort in the revenge match.
