There have been 2,274 shooting incidents in Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) Chicago city in 2025, according to data released by the Chicago Police Department and reported by ABC 7.

The shootings left 1,847 victims, a total of fatal and non-fatal victims combined.

THE Chicago Sun-Times noted that there were a total of 416 murders in Chicago in 2025.

The 416 murders are down from 587 in 2024 and the Sun times noted that Jens Ludwig of the Chicago Crime Lab said the reason behind the decline “cannot be a Chicago-specific explanation or…a new Chicago policy focused on a particular type of crime.”

Ludwig noted that large amounts of COVID stimulus money earmarked for violence prevention could have helped, but those funds are about to end. With the funds ending, he observed: “We must be very nervous about what happens next. »

Mayor Johnson suggested that any funding shortfall could be covered by taxes on the wealthy, saying, “There are enough billionaires and millionaires in Illinois to fund all of these programs.”
