There is a recall for more than 260,000 cases of shredded cheese sold in 31 states and Puerto Rico due to the risk of contamination from metal fragments, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA said the various shredded cheeses were recalled by Great Lakes Cheese Co. The cheese products are sold under private labels at several retailers, including Target, Walmart and Aldi.

The recall includes various cheeses such as mozzarella, Italian, pizza, mozzarella and provolone and mozzarella and parmesan.

The recall is classified as Class II because the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is low,” according to the FDA website.

An FDA states that ingestion of metal fragments can cause injuries such as dental damage, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the intestine.
