Netflix has quietly become one of the best places to browse fascinating documentaries and docuseries. And just like finding a good movie or series to binge, the challenge with documentaries isn’t finding something interesting, but deciding where to start.

For the weekend of March 20-22, however, I’ve made the choice easy for you: an expose on the toxic world of extreme masculinity, a bizarre hunt for a shady con artist, and a warning shot about our apparent inability to end our addiction to microplastics.

Louis Théroux: Inside the Manosphere

A sobering look at the controversial culture of male internet influencers

There’s a good chance that this documentary from award-winning British documentary maker and producer Louis Theroux will enrage you, or at the very least, give you a huge binge. There’s also a good chance you won’t be able to look away either. Louis Théroux: Inside the Manosphere just arrived on Netflix recently, and it offers a disturbing look into the world of ultra-masculine influencers who inhabit the world known as The Manosphere, which Theroux says is primarily “made up of non-controversial comedians and podcasters who broadcast shows about women, fitness, and wealth to a primarily male audience.”

In Inside the manosphereTheroux travels the world to build an audience with some of these men who are, he says, the most extreme individuals selling advice on dating, the pursuit of wealth and misogyny through their social networks. Included are popular figures, such as Myron Gaines, Justin Waller, Sneako and Harrison Sullivan (better known as HSTikkyTokky), who let Theroux into their world. He meets their wives, goes to their gyms and rides in their Lambos, all the while letting them talk long enough to reveal who they really are.

It’s still early to say what Rotten Tomatoes scores will be used for Inside the manosphere, but early reviews praise it for Theroux’s in-depth exposure of culture, while criticizing it for not focusing more on the female side and the damage these characters cause. You decide.

The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Trickster

A chilling detective series about a master manipulator

For fans of true crime docuseries, The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Scammer is going to be a meal, and make no mistake, it’s served ice cold. This three-part 2022 Netflix miniseries is a messy, tangled, and heartbreaking story that follows the victims of Robert Hendy-Freegard, a former English bartender who spent more than 10 years fooling people into believing he was an undercover MI5 spy, then using his powers of manipulation to con them into handing over their savings.

The stories of Freegard’s victims are heinous and the documentary focuses on several of them sharing their stories on camera. One of them, John Atkinson, fell prey during a period of weakness when a close friend had recently died. Freegard managed to convince him that the death was no accident and that his friend had been silenced by the IRA. It gets even weirder from there, but Freegard managed to extract over 390,000 pounds from Atkinson. The main objective of The puppeteer East the Cliftons, particularly Jake and Sophie, who recount how Freegard, now called David Hendy, met and isolated their mother, Sandra, before disappearing completely for over a decade.

There are so many other twists and turns to The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman. It’s a crazy story that will keep you captivated throughout and devastated for Freegard’s victims. No wonder it has a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
