The outpost
An unexpected warrior arises
A four-season, 49-episode fantasy adventure series from The CW, The outpost follows the sole survivor of a race called “Blackbloods” as she sets out to hunt down her family’s killers. It features the classic revenge plot, but without all the superfluous distractions of big-budget Hollywood fantasy productions.
Years after his entire village was destroyed by a band of brutal mercenaries, Talon (Librarians: the next chapter(Jessica Green) travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world in search of revenge. On her way to this outpost, she discovers that she possesses a mysterious supernatural power that she must learn to harness if she is to save herself and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.
The fast-paced fantasy adventure is comparable to Xena: Warrior Princess and involves high political stakes, magical powers, and intense, fun escape combat, with a little cheese thrown in for good measure. No big-budget CGI here. Just compelling revenge plots that develop into a larger story. The series offers a back-to-basics fantasy experience reminiscent of ’90s series, but set in an intriguing world with unique monsters and a heavy element of deep lore.

Merlin
Someone is keeping a big secret in Camelot
If you’re in the mood for epic historical fiction full of witchcraft and action, Merlin is a family retelling of the legend of King Arthur that focuses heavily on Merlin and Arthur’s origins and their relationship.
After arriving in Camelot, a medieval kingdom where magic is punishable by death under King Uther Pendragon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘Anthony Head), young Merlin (Humans‘ Colin Morgan) seeks to perfect his witchcraft skills while keeping them a secret. He soon finds himself a simple servant of the young Prince Arthur (Medici: the Magnificent‘s Bradley James) and ward of the royal court physician, Gaius (One foot in the grave(Richard Wilson), who takes Merlin under his wing and helps him face the dangers of the royal court. Over the course of five seasons, Merlin and Arthur go from mutual disdain to trusted friends and allies, with the mythical wizard guiding the future king to his destiny.
The light-hearted fantasy series – although a bit slow throughout the first season, but quickly ramps up – features a solid blend of adventure and humor with strong character growth and an engaging bromance between the series’ leads. Here, Camelot is completely reimagined and Merlin’s powers concealed, making it a refreshing and comforting watch compared to the gritty atmosphere of modern fantasy series.

Supernatural
THE X-Files encounter Buffy the Vampire Slayer
With over 300 episodes, Supernatural is the longest-running fantasy horror series to date. Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls) and Jensen Ackles (The boys) star as demon-hunting brothers who also battle ghosts, monsters, and fallen gods across the United States in a 1967 Chevrolet Impala. Do they have 20-inch blades on them because they’re ballers? You will have to look and see for yourself.
As they deal with the deaths of their mother and friends at the hands of supernatural beings, brothers Sam (Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) Winchester follow in the footsteps of their missing father and go on a hunt for paranormal threats. The highlight of the series, however, is their brotherly bond and willingness to sacrifice everything to save each other, emphasizing the series’ overall theme that family is not only marked by blood but also by choice.
What begins as an episodic monster-of-the-week show quickly spirals into season-long arcs involving apocalyptic events, the actual apocalypse, Heaven, Hell, and God himself. It features real scares, intense character development, and an evolving lore that balances emotional stakes with high-stakes supernatural threats. Given its unique blend of horror, drama, urban legends, and humor, it’s no wonder the series has lasted this long and amassed its passionate fan base. Plus, it features a just-right classic rock soundtrack, perfect for a road trip in a ’67 Chevy.
