FRANKTOWN, Colo. — Five people were killed, including three children, in a three-vehicle crash on a Colorado highway Monday, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. when the driver of a Toyota sedan lost control in the Franktown area, south of Denver, the Colorado State Patrol said in a news release.

The southbound Toyota left the right shoulder, then re-entered the roadway and rolled into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a northbound Ford sedan before striking a Ford pickup truck.

The driver of the Toyota, who was ejected when the vehicle began rolling, died at the scene, the State Patrol said.

The driver of the sedan and three of the five children in the vehicle died instantly. Two other children were airlifted to a nearby medical facility, but authorities have not released their conditions. The driver of the van was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation. The Douglas County coroner will identify the deceased once all next of kin have been notified, the State Patrol said.
