5 Reasons I’m Ready to Say Goodbye to Video Streaming Services

Like many, I cut the cable in favor of streaming services. The absence of announcements and a massive library of films and emissions were an easy sale. But I think the magic has disappeared. Not only have services changed, but my preferences also have my preferences. Here’s why it’s time for me to move on.
5
They become more expensive
Isolate the cost of any streaming service and it doesn’t seem bad. It is actually a fairly good deal given the large library of platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.
The fact is, and this is probably true for you too, but I subscribe to more than one streaming service. I have HBO Max, Netflix and Prime. In total, I pay $ 60 each month (although you can choose cheaper levels), or $ 720 by the end of the year.
Unfortunately, these services continue to increase prices, as Netflix did at the beginning of 2025. And it always seems that when prices are increased, others do it too.
I do not have as much time as I did to watch movies and shows, so it ends up feeling like wasted money if I don’t look much, especially if I don’t even use service at least once a month. Maybe I should try false cancellation of my streaming service for a better offer.

Algorithms are too biased
Each streaming service suggests content according to what you have looked at in the past. On the surface, it is a really practical algorithm because I have a preference for genres like fantasy and science fiction, but that does not quite capture everything I love. I do not expect perfection, but this filter creates a bias, which can hide the media that I would appreciate. This can explain the taste, but the algorithm cannot read my mood.
Another problem is the content announced. Maybe the algorithm offers something I am looking for, but how do you know that it is really a personal suggestion rather than something announced to everyone? In the end, the algorithm works against me because spontaneous discovery becomes rare.

There are many free streaming services
I had an experience. For a few months, I canceled my subscriptions. Naturally, I didn’t spend so much time to choose my surveillance list, but when I wanted to look at something, I looked at free streaming services. Pluto TV and Tubi have become easy choices because of their library, and even plex. Of course, they are supported by advertising, but when there are announcements, I will do something else.
What I noticed was the recommended content was much more varied, probably due to not having a month of use data to blur the search results, and it was generally older. These films and programs came from an era when studios took more risks. It was a good change of rhythm and, most often, I appreciated what I looked at.

I cultivate my physical collection
Films and programs come and constantly come from streaming services. Even the content is exclusively for the platform is not guaranteed to remain forever. Given this, and as I am now further from what I want to look at, my concern for preservation has increased.
Now, I buy physical media, like DVDs or Blu-ray. And, more importantly, I can then have them on my plex server so that my house can enjoy them. It is my family’s own streaming platform, with all specific films and emissions.
I want to continue my efforts to preserve the media that I appreciate or I just came across how happy entertainment has become (game included). Having a physical copy of my favorite movies and emissions is more important than ever.

My vision habits change
You can say that the most important reason for which I want to leave streaming services by the way is due to the way I spend my free time. Without streaming services there to monopolize my attention, I watch fewer films and, in turn, using this time elsewhere.
For example, I manage my own D&D sessions as Master of Dungeon, who takes time to prepare for myself, and I also like creative writing. Do not get me wrong, I love films, but now I watch at my own pace, not a workbench by my fear of missing.

If I do not spend enough time to justify the cost, enjoy other hobbies and change my way of looking, why should I continue to hang on Netflix, HBO Max or even a bonus? In the end, they are no longer for me, and it’s okay.
