Horror At “Insane” Announcement United FAs Make After Landing

Passengers flying United Airlines from Newark to Hilton Head Island were stunned to learn upon arrival that just seven checked bags had made the journey—out of a full flight carrying around 100 passengers.
The revelation came through a flight attendant’s announcement made as the plane taxied to the gate, according to a thread on Reddit.
The post, shared by user aquariusrising37, described widespread confusion and disbelief after hearing the reason cited: “weight requirements”.

“There were so many families with babies and young kids – but none of their checked bags or car seats made it on the flight,” the original poster (OP) wrote.
“I felt so bad they were stuck at the airport trying to figure out how to safely leave the airport without car seats.
“The staff at HHI was so nice and helpful… it’s insane that this could happen. I am wondering when the heck my suitcase will get returned to me.”
Reddit Reacts
While delays and missed baggage are not uncommon in commercial air travel, the scale of this specific incident—leaving virtually every passenger without luggage—struck many Reddit users as outrageous.
Especially since, as one pointed out, “they presumably knew that the flight would be weight-restricted”.
The user continued, “They obviously did at the time the bags were (not) loaded. It’s more work for them and the ground crew, but giving people the advance knowledge that they’d be leaving their bags and giving them the option to stay behind with them would have been a much more reasonable thing to do.”
Airlines must often balance the weight of passengers, luggage, and fuel on smaller regional flights, sometimes requiring offloading baggage to remain within safety limits.
However, decisions like these typically involve notifying passengers before boarding, not after they’ve landed without their belongings.
One Redditor summed it up succinctly: “I understand checked bags not making the flight, but leaving car seats behind really screws families over.”
According to United Airlines’ official baggage policy, “checked bags are considered delayed if they don’t arrive by the time you reach your final destination”.
‘United did a disservice to its customers’
In a message to Newsweek, the OP said the most frustrating thing had been the lack of communication from United.
They wrote, “The biggest takeaway for me was not being informed about the nuances of the HHI airport runway and how weather and air traffic could influence the weight restrictions they place on inbound flights.
“United did a disservice to its customers by not making this more obvious in the booking process because I imagine some families may have opted to fly to Savannah instead.”
Reporting Delayed Baggage
Travelers can report delayed baggage through the airline’s website, app, text, or by phone. If a bag is delayed more than 12 hours on a domestic flight, United says it automatically refunds the baggage fee.
Passengers may also request reimbursement for clothes and toiletries during the delay. Reimbursement claims must be filed within 45 days for U.S. domestic flights.
The airline’s customer care page also allows for feedback and claims submissions.
Newsweek has contacted United Airlines for comment via its website.
