Gen V (season 2)

When The Boys landed on Prime Video, it made a big, bloody splash thanks to the show brutally skewering the entire superhero genre. It didn’t take long for that show to get its own spinoff, and Gen V follows the misadventures of young, would-be heroes studying at Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. There, they compete for the only prize worth fighting for: a chance to join The Seven and stand alongside Homelander as he brings his lethal, laser-powered vision of a better country to life.

While spinoffs can vary in quality, the first season of Gen V was surprisingly good. It helped to flesh out the bonkers world of The Boys while establishing its own interesting characters and stories. Additionally, the first season has a whopping 97% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans loved having a hit new spinoff to enjoy even as The Boys arguably went off the rails. And if you’re ready to go back to school, check out Season 2 when it lands on Prime on September 17.

Helluva Boss

When Helluva Boss landed on Prime, this animated comedy cartoon series already had a built-in audience. That’s because it’s set in the same universe as Hazbin Hotel and features a similar art style and sense of humor. Helluva Boss also has an interesting premise involving those who work for a company in Hell who are hired to kill people back in the land of the living. As such, this show will be best enjoyed by those who love a good, black comedy.

Incidentally, Helluva Boss is focused more on the relationships between its various characters than Hazbin Hotel. That makes for interesting television, but what really makes things engaging is how hilariously amoral many of these characters are. If you like tales about dynamic characters seeking redemption, you might want to skip this one. But if you love entertaining adventures of bad people doing bad things, Helluva Boss is the off-kilter adult cartoon you’ve been waiting for.

Novocaine

There’s a niche cinematic genre that I love to call “a John Wick movie.” These are the kinds of films that delight in taking affable everyman actors and turning them into action stars. Some of my faves in this genre include Nobody and Kate, starring (respectively) Bob Odenkirk and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Now, the latest star to get the full-action makeover is Jack Quaid. In Novocaine, he plays a man who can feel no pain, and he decides to put his powers to good use in order to save the girl he’s been pining for from her mysterious attackers.

Is this the most original movie, even in the John Wick genre? Not exactly: it’s basically Kick-Ass without the capes. With that being said, the movie is filled with plenty of killer action sequences, and Quaid does a great job of injecting humor and pathos into his reluctant hero. He’s a man who can feel no pain, and you might just share that feeling after you turn your brain off and start vibing with this breezy beat’em up movie.

American Horror Story (season 13)

Some of the best horror films are anthologies, including movies like Creepshow and even All Hallows’ Eve, which introduces the world to the gonzo gore of Art the Clown. American Horror Story is a show that brings the anthology premise to the small screen. Each season is its own contained story, and when actors come back, they usually (though not always) play different characters altogether. That means this show has a little something for everyone, and you can jump in at any point if you don’t want to watch it from the beginning.

That’s good news for fans new and old because the 13th season of American Horror Story will be streaming on Prime Video September 24. So far, details about the new season are almost completely unknown, and many of the show’s biggest fans were surprised at the sudden announcement that it would be landing this month. So if you’re ready for a spooky good time with one of the scariest shows on television, be sure to mark your calendar for the return of American Horror Story.

5

The Girlfriend

Amazon’s latest original series is The Girlfriend, which adapts the Michelle Frances novel of the same name. The show promises to be a tour de force for Robin Wright, who serves as star, writer, and executive producer. In this new series, she plays a mother with a seemingly perfect life: she’s a wealthy American living in London, and she has a wonderful family that includes a loving husband and smart young son. But everything threatens to unravel when the son begins dating a working-class woman who might truly love him or might just be a gold-digger looking to sleep her way to the top.

That girlfriend is played by Olivia Cooke, best known to genre fans for her work in House of the Dragon. Sparks fly when she bounces off Wright’s character, and what makes The Girlfriend so great is that it offers frank observations about family power dynamics and dating in the modern world. It works well as a thriller, but also works well as an examination of modern romance, making this the rare miniseries that leaves you with much to ponder even as its final episode leaves you breathless.

Black Bag

What if one of the best films of the year was one you hadn’t even heard of? The Steven Soderbergh movie Black Bag launched this year and didn’t make a huge pop culture splash. That’s a shame, because this movie is filled with some of my favorite stars, including Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan. One of Hollywood’s greatest directors working with some of its most accomplished actors; now, that’s a recipe for success!

And that recipe led to a very tasty spy thriller with a fun twist on the genre. Fassbender plays a secret agent who must investigate his wife, a woman who may be a traitor. The result is a film that combines the best elements of spycraft and relationship-driven drama. Because of this, the movie delivers one surprisingly awesome scene after another, most of which are laced with delightfully dry humor that will keep you laughing (at least, when you’re not on the edge of your seat).

Love Hurts

Everything Everywhere All At Once helped to make Ke Huy Quan (previously known mostly for his roles in iconic ’80s films The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) more popular than ever. It was only a matter of time before he headlined his own ambitious film, and Love Hurts casts Quan against type as an action hero. That’s right, kids: it’s another movie in the John Wick genre, and this one has Quan playing a reluctant hero forced into a world of violence.

Like John Wick, his character is a former assassin for a mysterious and ruthless organization. And like John Wick, Quan’s character is trying to lead a normal life before getting dragged back into his old life. As you can tell, Love Hurts doesn’t exactly break the mold in this genre. But what it lacks in originality, it makes up for in charm: Quan is one of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood, and he gives his character hidden warmth and gentle depth. Also, thanks to his long career as a stunt choreographer, Quan delivers the most masterful martial arts moves this side of Jackie Chan.

By now, everyone is familiar with Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef best known for his hilariously abrasive criticisms of others’ cooking. But you might not be familiar with his daughter, Tilly Ramsay, who decided to follow in her father’s foody footsteps. Fortunately, her show, Dish It Out, is much less intense than anything hosted by Ramsay, and that’s because this reality show is not a cooking competition.

Instead, Dish it Out has Tilly Ramsay focusing on bringing different recipes to life. But the show is more about the journey than the destination, which is why we get plenty of screentime of her exploring viral food trends and discovering new ingredients. Plus, the show features cameos from Gordon Ramsay and plenty of celebs, making this show feel like a crowded kitchen where everyone shares something in common: an earnest love of food.

Confidence Queen

Do you have an appreciation for international television? If so, you’re sure to love Confidence Queen, a South Korean show with a very unique premise. It follows a trio of con artists who decide to use their swindling skills to expose those who scam others. In this way, the series embodied the Robin Hood ethos of robbing from the rich, especially when we see our heroes returning cash to the victims it was stolen from.

While only two episodes have aired as of the time of this writing, Confidence Queen has impressed me as one of the freshest shows of the year. This drama is as confident as its title implies, and Park Min-young is mesmerizing in the main role as the brilliant conwoman at the heart of the trio’s ambitious schemes. Stylish, sexy, and silly in equal measure, Confidence Queen has a little something for everyone.
