Nine students were injured Tuesday after a driver hit them with a vehicle at a school in Ankeny, Iowa, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. as students were being picked up at St. Luke Catholic School on NW Weigel Drive, city police and firefighters said at a news conference.

A vehicle in the pickup line jumped the curb and struck the students, officials said.

Several parents in line helped the children until emergency services arrived on the scene. All nine victims were then rushed to local hospitals.

Some of the affected students were seriously injured, according to authorities. Their ages and conditions have not been made public, but the school teaches students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

The driver, who has not been identified, was not injured and remained at the scene after the incident.

Sgt. Trevor McGraw, a spokesman for the Ankeny Police Department, told reporters the incident did not appear to be an intentional act of violence.

Investigators continue to look into possible causes of the collision.

People were asked to avoid the area to allow emergency responders access.

“Thank you to the parents in the school pick-up line who immediately rendered assistance to the injured while emergency services were en route,” city officials said. “Thank you to the teachers and staff for helping the injured students and students who witnessed this traumatic incident.”

The Diocese of Des Moines told WHO 13: “Please know that we are praying for the families involved and for the first responders who helped. »
