It Took 10 Years, but Apple Is Finally Giving the Camera Hump a Name

Disstabrication of the ineliguous terms like “Lens Bump”, Apple considered good to rename the iPhone 17 and the thickest air section as “camera tray”.
Although it may seem a little more than a marketing exercise, there is a little more in this “functionality” than the objectives and the sensors. In fact, the camera set could be responsible for some of the biggest gains in new iPhones.
He was never called a camera tray before
Thanks immediately a fact: the term “camera platform” is new. With the ease with which Apple dropped the term in its Keynote iPhone 2025, you would be forgiven to think that the term had been completely standardized beforehand. But no, you’re not crazy. Maybe Apple has been using this internal terminology for some time, but this is the first time that we have heard this section called tray. And that makes sense given the literal meaning of the word.
For most of us, it was “the bit where the objective exceeds” or “the reason why your iPhone will not remain flat on a table” for the longest. In all honesty, Google has tried to improve this with the “camera visor” of the pixel, the terminology that the company used in its own marketing media.
It is not surprising that Apple now has its own wording for this area, which is mainly associated with the design of the iPhone 17 pro confronting. In the weeks preceding the announcement of the 17 pro, yields and leaks were washed everywhere on the internet, and the conversation mainly focused on how it was the “ugliest” iPhone ever designed and unnecessarily thick in all bad places.
Although this is certainly a choice, Apple probably bets big on the fact that you will not notice it once you have slapped a case on it. I also think that the design will be completely standardized in a few months, and we could even see other manufacturers kissing the concept more than they have already done.
More space, better cameras
In the case of the iPhone 17 Pro, the camera tray is what shelters the most desirable feature of the flagship phone: a triple camera system. Each of them now has a 48 megapixel sensor for the first time, which means that in theory, you will not need to avoid telephoto jewels if you want the best possible quality photos.
I have been using an iPhone 13 pro for four years now, and even if I like to have the possibility of using three objectives, it is undeniable that I consciously favored the large standard camera in many situations for this very reason.
This year’s 17 pro has a large standard camera which has the equivalent of a 48 mm focal distance, with a fixed opening of f / 1.78. The iPhone draws 24 or 48 megapixels, with the option of a 2x optical quality zoom with a harvest of 12 megapixels.
The ultra-realities camera offers an equivalent focal distance of 13 mm with a fixed opening of F / 2.2. You will get full fixed images of 48 megapixels to a 0.5x zoom, and you can also take 48 shots of megapixel macro. Finally, there is the inclusion of a 48 megapixel telephoto lens with a fixed opening f / 2.8. It offers a 4x optical zoom (100 mm equivalent focal length) to 48 megapixels or a 12x optical quality culture of 12x megapixels (200 mm of equivalent focal length).
While we will have to wait to see what the daily snapshots look like, the examples of Apple images seem impressive. If you go from an older iPhone, you will have several generations of improvements to wait, including a better calculation photograph via successive processors in series A, low light performance always improved, and a lot of video options, including HDR 4K in Dolby Vision at 120 IPS.
The camera of the iPhone 17 Pro is a force with which it is necessary to count, and the only area that is always stuck in the past is a 40x digital zoom cap, which is far from what competitors like Samsung and Google offer 100x (although if you never venture into the digital zoom range, you probably don’t worry).
It’s not just the camera to blame
Despite the brand change as a camera set, this area now houses more than the camera system. Apple has reorganized the interns of the iPhone to better use this field, which could explain why things seem so bulbous this time.
This is where the system on A19 Pro chip is now located, the brain of the IPhone 17 pro operation. The new cooling system of the steam chamber reached up to the bump, and NVME storage has also been moved here. In addition, Apple did this for the pro and air models (but strangely, not for the basic iPhone 17 … for the moment.
The result is more space in the main iPhone chassis for a larger battery. This could explain the 33 and 39 -hour video playback numbers that Apple cited for the iPhone 17 pro and pro max only ESIM. The air is cited at 27 hours in this regard, so it probably does not worth thinking about how things would be disastrous if the air lacked this compromise on the design.
