Oversight Slaps Jill Biden Aide Anthony Bernal With Subpoena After He Dodges Testimony On Biden’s mental decline

The president of the surveillance of the house James Comer assigned to appear the former assistant of Jill Biden, Anthony Bernal, after having refused to testify in the cognitive probe of Biden.

Commer assigned Bernal to appear before the Committee on July 16 at 10:00 am, according to an image of the document he published on X.

The president began assignment by emphasizing the close ties of Bernal with former president Joe Biden and the former First Lady Jill Biden, declaring: “The committee sought to understand if you have contributed to an effort to hide the aptitude of the former president Biden to serve the American people.”

“You have refused the committee’s request. However, to advance the surveillance and the responsibilities and the interests of the committee, your testimony is essential,” he said. (Related: Trump’s White House opens a path for Biden aid to say everything)

“To avoid other delays, your appearance before the Committee is now obliged,” said Commer.

Bernal would have been part of the little “Politburo” protecting the president against the exam, according to a book on the decline of Biden by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson. The First Lady would have considered Bernal as her “work husband,” said three sources at the New York Post.

The assignment also stressed that Bernal’s lawyer informed the committee that he intended to cooperate and voluntarily participate in an interview for the investigation.

He said that on June 6, Bernal’s legal team suggested on June 26 for the interview – more than two weeks later than the initial date of May 22 requested by the Committee. By courtesy, the committee accepted the new date.

“Your lawyer has also expressed his concern about the committee’s standard practice of providing interview subjects only a week in advance, arguing that this calendar would not allow enough time to prepare you for the interview,” said Commer.

“Although the committee does not agree – believe that a week is more than sufficient – it acted in good faith and sent the interview subjects to your lawyer on June 13, almost two weeks before the date of the agreed interview,” continued the letter.

Comer also detailed the Committee’s communications calendar with Bernal’s lawyer, declaring that on June 18, the Bernal legal team asked for an additional three -week delay to allow more time to prepare for the transcribed interview. The committee rejected the request and confirmed that the transcribed interview would take place as initially planned. The committee asked Bernal’s lawyer if he was still willing to appear or if he had to make an assignment.

Commer noted that within ten minutes of the Committee’s email, Bernal’s lawyer replied that “no assignment is necessary”.

However, Bernal’s lawyer reportedly declared on Wednesday to the committee that Bernal was no longer ready to appear voluntarily for the interview of June 26, which prompted the assignment of the committee.

Commer previously criticized Bernal in a Wednesday declaration for the safeguarding of testimony after having already accepted voluntarily, accusing him of escaping the responsibility now that the executive privilege has been lifted. Bernal is one of the four administrative aids of Biden – alongside Neera Tanden, Ashley Williams and Annie Tomasini – who previously agreed to transcribed interviews.

Tanden told the closing testimony committee on Tuesday that she had authorized the use of the autopen, but was not sure to know who gave the final approval, according to a Commer statement.
