Most People Use ChatGPT for Personal Life, Not Work, According to a New OpenAI Study

When Chatgpt was launched for the first time in November 2022, the parent company Openai presented it as a productivity tool and a game changer to delegate subordinate work tasks, such as the response to emails or the writing of Mémos. Openai has just published a new article on how hundreds of millions of people in the world really use Chatgpt, and the results show a striking change in the way people use it. What has started as a work assistant is now a tool that people use for their personal life.
In mid-2014, almost half of all conversations on Chatgpt were linked to employment. In mid-2025, this number fell just over a quarter.

This does not mean that people use the chatbot less. Chatgpt has around 700 million weekly active users worldwide, sending more than 2.5 billion messages per day or around 29,000 messages per second, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research report and OPENAI, Duke University and Harvard University.
In short, more and more people use the platform – but not for work -related queries.

The article describes a distance from asking Chatgpt to perform tasks, such as text writing, towards users who ask him questions. For example, “writing help included more than a third of use last year. Now, it’s closer to a quarter.”
Meanwhile, “information search” increased from 14% to 24% of all conversations, which means that people use Chatgpt more as replacement of the search engine for information and advice.
“Overall, our results suggest that Chatgpt has a broad impact on the global economy,” said the document. “The fact that the use of non-work increases faster suggests that the well-being of the generative use of AI could be substantial.”
(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET’s parent company in April, filed a complaint against Chatgpt Maker Openai, alleging that it violated Ziff Davis Copyrights in the training and exploitation of its AI systems.)
That leads this change
The OpenAi newspaper also examines the demography behind these requests:
- Gender: The first users biased male. In January 2024, only 37% of users had names generally considered female. In July 2025, this group increased to 52% of all users, which means that women (or those with female names) use the system at almost equal or slightly higher than men.
- Age: Almost half (46%) of chatgpt users have declared themselves between 18 and 25 years old. This young demography promotes personal requests, such as asking questions about hobbies or looking for advice, while older users are more likely to use Chatgpt for work-related tasks.
- Geography: The use of chatgpt is no longer concentrated in richer countries. The quickest growth is in income from lower than Mid-Milieu, where GDP per capita varies almost $ 10,000 to $ 40,000, and smartphones are often the main gateway to the Internet.
- Education: Users holding university degrees or more are more likely to use Chatgpt for professional tasks. For example, 37% of messages are linked to work for users with less than a baccalaureate, 46% are linked to work for users with a baccalaureate and 48% are linked to work for those who have higher education. Non -degree users are still strongly committed, mainly using the chatbot for daily questions and support.
- Occupation: The document also found that users of very remunerated professional and technical professions are more likely to use Chatppt for work.
