Family calls for ‘justice’ after boy fatally struck near Austin school
Anna Perez was held in the middle of North Cicero avenue in Austin on Friday afternoon, cars passing through her on the left and right slowly while she implores the horn drivers.
“Justice for Anakin!” She called one day after her nephew, Anakin Perez, 9, was fatally struck by a car when she went to McNair primary school.
On the sidewalk, her family, her young students in brown collar and community members sang with her. One day after the deadly collision, Anakin’s family gathered near the school to demand justice after the driver’s release without criminal accusations.
“He (was) a child who (was) just excited to go to school,” Anna Perez, Anakin’s aunt, said on Friday.
Anakin was struck by a light chevrolet sedan traveling west around 7:40 am Thursday in West Walton Street block 4800, the same block as the McNair school, police announced. He was transported urgently to Stroger hospital, where he was declared dead. The results of an autopsy carried out on Friday were pending, according to the office of the cook’s County medical examiner.
The driver was initially arrested but was released without criminal accusations, police said. She received a quote to have a pedestrian care on the road, said the police.
Friday afternoon, a memorial of Spider-Man balloons, plush animals, flowers and candles had raised outside the school, where Anakin was a student of fourth year.
“He was an incredible child,” recalls Perez, 38 years old. “He was very frank, very funny, very outgoing.” He also loved his sports, football in particular, she said. In the center of the fortune memorial for Anakin was sitting on three football balls and a helmet.

Valeria Fernandez, Anakin’s grandmother, said she didn’t know what to do without Anakin.
“I don’t know how to face it, nor help my daughter to face it, because it’s really difficult. I did not expect, ”she said, vacillating and stifling the sobs. “I expected to die in front of him because I am the grandmother. I am supposed to die in front of him. ”
