Senate Confirms Mike Waltz As UN Ambassador

The Senate confirmed that Mike Waltz, the former national security adviser from President Donald Trump, was the United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) on Friday afternoon.
The upper chamber approved Waltz’s confirmation in a vote close to the party from 47 to 43, just in time for the collection of the United Nations General Assembly in New York which is expected to start on September 23. Confirmation also fills the final position of Trump’s office – almost eight months after the president’s second term. The only republican to vote against Waltz was the Kentucky Rand Paul senator. Meanwhile, three Democrats – John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire and Mark Kelly of Arizona – crossed the aisle to confirm Waltz.

Waltz’s confirmation intervenes in the middle of Russia’s refusal to end the war in Ukraine, degenerating tensions between China and Taiwan and the negotiations in progress to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
Waltz was approved by the senatorial committee for foreign relations on July 24, but was one of the many candidates to be returned to the committee in early September due to the complaints of the Democrats concerning the initial votes of the Panel. He again adopted the Committee Rally on Wednesday, with Shaheen, the best democrat in the panel, voting yes, and only one republican, Paul, no.
The candidate told senators during his committee hearing that the UN needs a “major reform” adding that there was also “a good significant work to do”. Waltz also told Shaheen that he was “absolutely critical” for the United States to play a role in fighting the growing influence of China.
Waltz was entangled in the controversy during his mandate of just over three months as a national security advisor after adding Jeffrey Goldberg, editor -in -chief of the Atlantic and Long Time Trump Critic, to a group cat of 18 people on the signal of the messaging application in March 2025. Messages, published by the Outlet, discussed of Houthi in Yemen.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a subsequent statement that the president “continues to have the greatest confidence in his national security team, including the National Security Advisor Mike Waltz”.
The president appointed Waltz to be the American ambassador to the UN on May 1, the same day he left his post as a national security advisor. Waltz was Trump’s second candidate to represent the country at the UN, according to the Republican representative of New York Elise Stefanik, whose appointment was removed by the White House at the end of March.
Waltz is a former colonel of the American army special forces, commonly known as the Green Beret, and represented the 6th district of the Florida Congress in the Chamber from 2019 to 2025.
