Diminish Distractions by Setting Your iPhone to Gray Scale When You’re Home

Telephones are undeniably Useful when you are in the world. Directions, photos, music, messaging with the people you meet, or even just scrolling while you are waiting for the bus – everything is great.
The problem with phones, in my opinion, is when you are at home. The house is where you could spend your time reading a book, practicing an instrument or playing in the garden. But everything is hard, almost impossible, when your phone is so interesting.
This is why it is important to make your phone boring expressly. Whenever we talk about how to break the dependence on your smartphone, a tip that is generally cited is to adjust your phone to Gray. The problem: making your phone in black and white and gray all the time makes it less useful during the times you really need it.
This is why I set up an automation that defines my phone on a gray scale when I arrive at home and return it in color when I leave my house. This gives me the best of both worlds: a fully functional phone on the road and less distracting at home. Even better, because I use Apple shortcuts to do this, I don’t need to buy or install applications. I don’t even need to press a button to make it work.
Here’s how you can configure this. And yes, because these tools are specific to iOS, you will need an iPhone.
Step 1: Make 2 shortcuts
To start, open the shortcut app on your iPhone. We are going to make two shortcuts, one for your return home and one for your departure. Name both appropriately.

For the first shortcut, which will be triggered when you return home, look for the action Define color filters. Add it and make sure the shortcut is set to turn color filters On. This will filter the colors on the screen and turn your display gray scale. For the other shortcut, make sure it will transform color filters Disabled. You should now have two shortcuts.
Step 2: Configure automation
From the main screen of the shortcut application, press Automation In the lower toolbar. We will configure two automation: one for when you leave the house and another for your return home.
