Democrats’ Senate Measure to Limit President Trump’s Power to Wage War Fails – RedState

The attempted Democrats in the American Senate to limit Trump’s presidential power by adopting a resolution invoking the law on the powers of the war fell to overcome, almost according to the party party, during a vote on Friday evening, by a count of 53-47.

Friday, the Senate blocked a democratic resolution which would have forced President Trump to go to the Congress for approval of a new military action against Iran, taking a blow to efforts to slow down his war powers.

The vote of 53 to 47 against the development of the resolution, mainly along the party, occurred almost a week after the president unilaterally ordered strikes against three Iranian nuclear installations without consulting the Chamber and the Senate. He also followed a burning debate on the Senate soil on the role of the congress in the authorization to use the military force.

The measure, sponsored by Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, invoked the law on war powers, a 1973 law aimed at limiting the power of a president to enter into an armed conflict without the consent of the congress. He would have forced the White House to inform the legislators and to request the approval of the Chamber and the Senate before the American forces could take new military measures against Iran.

It was a direct attack on President Trump and his administration, after successful air strikes on Iranian nuclear installations in recent days, which the hoof of the majority of the Senate John Barrasso (R-WY) spoke during the debate on the Senate soil bill:

Democrats, of course, rushed to transform this successful strike into a political fight. National security moves quickly. This is why our Constitution says: “Give the commander the real real authority.”

Barrasso added that the passage of the provision of war powers “would prevent the president from protecting us in the future”.

Senator Kaine, a former candidate for the Democrat vice-president, also spoke of speech on Friday, in a vain attempt to reach Trump’s detractors to support his political bill:

I think that this week’s events have shown that war is too important to be sent to a person’s decisions.

The hill report on the resolution of Kaine linked above has noted that some had thought that more GOP senators would vote for this, “but some were donated after Trump announced a cease-fire between Israel and Iran on Monday which resisted in recent days.”

A Democrat and a Republican have crossed the aisle:

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) Was the Lone Gop Lawmaker to vote with the Democrats. Senator John Fetterman (D-P.), An ardent support from Israel, voted with Republicans.

At one point, there was also a similar resolution floating in the lower room, copofacked by the representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) and the representative Ro Khanna (D-CA). The resolution of the house has since been abandoned.
