U.K., Canada and Australia recognize Palestinian state

On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia officially recognized a Palestinian state, more insulating the United States and Israel diplomatically.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace and a solution to two states, I clearly declare as Prime Minister of this great country that the United Kingdom officially recognizes Palestine’s state,” said British chief Keir Starmer in a video message.
The coordinated move of the three Commonwealth nations comes from the advance on the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York. Other nations, including France, should recognize a Palestinian state during world meetings.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was furious at Sunday’s announcement and promised to prevent a Palestinian state from training.
“A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan river,” said Netanyahu. “The international community will intend to speak about it in the coming days.”
The Israeli chief should speak on Friday at the General Assembly. During his trip to the United States, he should also meet President Trump.
Starmer said earlier this year that the United Kingdom would recognize a Palestinian state if no cease-fire agreement had been concluded to interrupt the war in progress in Gaza. During the following months, Israel intensified its offensive troops and moved the troops in the city of Gaza.
The United Kingdom has a unique historical role in the region, because Great Britain and France have dug a territory belonging to the former Ottoman Empire according to the First World War. The United Kingdom had administrative control of Palestine until Israel was created.
“It is important for France and the United Kingdom to recognize Palestine due to the inheritance of the participation of these two countries in the Middle East,” said Burcu Ozcelik, principal researcher for the Middle East security in the Royal United Services Institute based in London. “But without the United States coming aboard the idea of a Palestine, I think that very few will change on the ground.”
