I’ve read hundreds of free Kindle books with Libby. Here’s how.

If I had to buy every book I read, I could not pay the rent. Reading for free is not difficult; I always exchange books with friends, I travel the little free libraries in my neighborhood, I do shopping your kindle day, and of course, I love my local library. However, as an online and exciting expert, I almost always use a device for reading. But as I use and test electronic players, I still need to be able to use my library card and read for free. This is where Libby comes into play.
Libby is the best application of my phone. He connects you to library networks (of which you are a member who carries cards) so that you can borrow and read electronic books on the Libby application or an e-lise, like Kindle. Having used Libby for several years, it is a crucial part of my content regime and an invaluable resource to stay well read.
How does Libby work?
I felt like hitting the jackpot to find “Great Big Beautiful Life” by Emily Henry as ready to borrow.

After several weeks, my copy of “Stag Dance” by Torrey Peters was finally ready to borrow and be added to my library.

Libby, which is part of the Overdrive system, connects you to the digital collection of your library. To use Libby, log in to use your library card information. Do you have several library cards? You can attach as many cards as possible to your account. Once connected, you can browse the digital collection of your library. Some books will be ready to borrow immediately, which you can check and will be automatically added to your library.
Other books will force you to place a catch. New and popular books will often require long expectations, but professional advice: having several library cards allows you to compare waiting times in different libraries, so that you can find yourself in the shortest line.
Once a socket is ready to borrow, it will appear in your library, allowing you to check it. Libby allows you to borrow books for two weeks. Some books can be renewed, while others have people waiting to borrow them cannot be renewed.
A big update from Libby 2025
On September 18, 2025, Libby brought a major change to its maintenance system which upset certain users. Now, instead of being able to delay the catches for a while, users will have to suspend the catches until they are ready to receive them.
Users have complained about change, saying that they will not remember not suspending their catch. In response, Libby explained via Instagram that the new system: “Help libraries to serve more readers by keeping moving books and reducing expired holds.”
Where can you read books with Libby?

When you take a book on Libby, this will give you several options on how to read.

You have some options on how to read your Libby books. You can do this in the Libby app on a smartphone or tablet. You can also read on a browser via the Libby website. The best part of the use of the Libby application or website is that it synchronizes your progress between all devices. In this way, if you leave your iPad at home, you can read on your iPhone and pick up where you stopped.

Libby also allows you to read your books in the form of EPUB files. The best way to do it is to use Adobe Digital Editions, so if you have a device with Adobe access but not Libby access, like Boox E-Readers, you can always access your borrowed books.
To read on an electronic player, you can also send your books directly to a Kobo or Kindle device. Kobo has the most fluid Libby integration. You can connect via Overdrive (the parent company of Libby) on your device, and when you take books, they can automatically populate in your library.
For Kindle users, there are a few additional steps in the process.

To read Libby books on a Kindle, select the “Read with Kindle” option in the Libby application. This will take you to Amazon, where you click on the “Book from the library” button. The book will then automatically appear in the library of your application and Kindle devices. Remember that, once the book in your library, you will have to download it to your Kindle to start reading.
What is the best e-Lise for Libby?

The Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Libra color is easily the best e-lisors for Libby.

The best e-lisors for Libby are either Kobo Libra color or Kindle Paperwhite. The one you opt depends on how you use Libby. If you only have one library card, the Kobo is the best e-Lise for Libby. All your Libby books borrowed automatically on the device without needing to press additional buttons. The drawback is that you can only have one Libby account attached to your Kobo at a time.
If you have several library cards, the Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-Lise for Libby. Although it requires an additional step to get your books on the device, you can borrow with several cards simultaneously.
If you do not want to buy an electronic reader, you can start with Libby immediately by reading on a smartphone or tablet that you already have. If you are going to read on a tablet, I recommend the iPad Mini, which is smaller than the other models, preventing the wrist tension while keeping the device. The screen of an iPad is sometimes too bright for reading, and if that hurts you, you can add a paper -shaped screen blanket.
Avoid Barnes & Noble Nook and Boox e-Read readers to read with Libby, because the two require tedious steps to get your library books on devices.
Disadvantages in Libby
There are not many drawbacks in Libby – I would say that there are technically. But as a word of warning, I think it is important to consider Libby as the library that it is and not as an electronic book store. With an electronic book shop, you can buy almost any title you want, but with a library, books are sometimes not available.
This can sometimes be due to the fact that libraries have limited copies, so you have to wait for weeks, even months, a book is available to borrow. We hope that the modification of the Libby restraint system will reduce long waiting times.
Sometimes your library will not have a book at all in its collection. The best way to avoid this problem is to get several library cards, because different networks have variable catalogs.
