Democratic state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also slaughtered to their Champlin, Minnesota, a few kilometers away by the alleged shooter, but the couple survived, despite multiple ball wounds.
The man suspected of having done the murders, Vance Boelter, was accused of harassing and murdering the hortmans, hunting and shooting the Hoffmans. Boetler is detained in police custody.
In a statement Thursday, Boelter’s wife Jenny sent her condolences in the name of herself and her children to Hortman and Hoffman families.
“We are absolutely shocked, a broken and completely blind heart. This violence does not correspond to our beliefs at all as a family,” said Jenny Boelter in a press release through his lawyer.
“It is a betrayal of everything we hold as the principles of our Christian faith,” she said.
Hortman’s assassination is one of the last attacks on political figures in recent years. In April, the manor of the Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro was burnt down while he and his family slept inside.
Last summer, President Trump was the target of two apparent assassination attempts during his White House race.
Research shows that Americans are more polarized today than they have been for decades and that threats against members of the congress have seen a peak.

To honor the heritage of the Hortmans, the couple’s two children, Sophie and Colin, suggested that the community connects more with the people around them.
“The best way to honor the memory of our parents is to do something, whether large or small, to make our community a little better for someone else,” they said.
