My In-Laws Helped Me Put Apple’s Live Translation to the Ultimate Test
Above the time when Apple added live translation of the language to its airpods, my Hispanophone mother-in-law gave rise to visiting. The timing was perfect for putting this new functionality to the test. I obtained an A in Spanish 2 in high school, but I barely speak enough to follow the conversation.
The translation of live language, in which Siri feeds a delayed translation of what is said in your headphones, works on the new Airpod Pro 3 with Airpod Pro 2 from last year and AirPods 4. You must also associate them with an iPhone running the last iOS 26 software with Apple Intelligence.
My mother-in-law is bilingual and speaks English perfectly, but Spanish is his favorite language. She will often jump in Spanish first when I speak to my husband – and that meant it was my big moment! I would not be in the dark!
I just had to define the Apple Translate application on my iPhone to convert Spanish into English, but this can also translate between Portuguese, French and German. With an Airpod Tige press, Siri filled me in real time on everything they said in Spanish.
Well, almost everything. Depending on how words are pronounced, or if someone uses a rare word, or if there is more than one person who speaks – Siri is sometimes mistaken. Very bad. According to my experience, Siri could simply put swear in where they do not belong (this happened more than once), or build descriptive words. And I had to be very close to their conversation for it to work.

Apple calls this a “beta” product, so I know there are folds to train. But even with these faults, this experience showed me that orange iPhones are not the most important technological history this month.
