Carlos Sainz cherishes Charles Leclerc road trip: ‘One of those adventures that you will remember’
Carlos Sainz talked about the trip on the impromptu road to him and the driver of Ferrari Charles Leclerc were forced to take after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix of Formula 1.
After celebrating his first podium with Williams, the Spanish driver hoped to go home as usual the same evening. But the storms in Nice meant that he and Leclerc, as well as the friends of the driver of Mongasque, Joris Trouche and Antoine Truchet, divert their flight to Italy.

Sainz, who then brought the group of four back to Monaco in a rental van, explained that even if it was a frustrating situation, it led to memories that he will return when he is old.
“A hectic landing in an airport so late, having to rent a van, having to jump in a van with all the bags and having to go home for a few hours,” said Sainz during an event for Hackett London.
“But in the end, I was thinking about it, we were very frustrated because we really wanted to land in Nice and [have a] 20 minutes by car, but you think about it and you say that these are the kinds of days you remember.

“If we had landed in Nice and we would have just taken the taxi at normal home of 20 minutes or something else, we would never remember that day or this moment. But these are these little adventures that you will remember when you are older.”
Leclerc initially shared a video of the group as they launched themselves into their unexpected road trip.
“So, after a difficult weekend in Baku, I thought it could not get worse, but …,” said Leclerc, showing the dark road in front of them.

“We drive a van!” Saiz said. “In the middle of Italy,” he said when they asked him where they were. “We were diverted for a storm, we could not land in Nice, so we landed in the middle of Italy. We rented a van, and now we are on the way to Monaco.
“A two-hour journey, and we will do it in an hour and a half,” he joked.
Later, reports emerged on the social networks of a quasi-failure between two planes at Nice Côte d’Azur airport, where Sainz and Leclerc had planned to land. An Easyjet flight was a few moments to take off when a Nouvellair flight began to land on the wrong track, narrowly missing the Easyjet plane. Fortunately, no injury has been reported.
