A police officer was killed in the exercise of his duties in Kansas on Saturday evening when he answered a call for domestic violence, confirmed officials at Fox News Digital.

According to the Hays police service, police responded to a domestic violence report on Downing Street in Hays, Kansas.

When the officer arrived at the scene, the suspect opened fire.

The officer was struck and taken to a neighboring hospital. The officer was then deceased. The suspect was declared dead on the scene, the authorities said.

Police said no additional suspect was sought as part of the incident. The officer has not yet been identified.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has since taken responsibility for carrying out the investigation into the shooting.
