Things to know about federal law enforcement activity in Chicago, Portland, Memphis

Memphis, tenn. – On Sunday, armed federal agents patrolled the streets of the city center of Chicago and President Donald Trump called 200 troops of the National Guard for the deployment in Portland, Oregon, a decision firmly opposed by the governor who immediately provoked a trial saying that Trump had survived his authority.
The latest examples of application of rampant federal laws and military presence in American cities have occurred while Memphis are preparing for the arrival of the additional federal authorities, including immigration and drug application agents, that the republican governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, expects to happen this week.
In Chicago, Sunday, dozens of armed federal agents, in full tactical equipment, have traveled the streets of some of the most important tourist and shopping areas in the city. This comes in the midst of an increase in the application of immigration that started at the beginning of the month, including repeated conflicts in an ice building in BroadView, west of Chicago, where the federal authorities fired pepper and tear gas canopies on Friday.
The Trump’s order of troops one day came after saying on social networks that he ordered the Ministry of Defense to “provide all the troops necessary to protect the Rava Portland war”. Trump said the decision was necessary to protect American immigration and customs application facilities. Governor Tina Kotek said Trump’s description was a false story to stimulate the conflict.
The movements follow the repression of Trump’s crime in the Columbia district and the actions in Los Angeles in response to immigration demonstrations which have become violent with the arrival of the troops.
Here is an overview of the federal activities for applying potential and current law in Chicago, Portland and Memphis.
On Sunday, federal agents walked along Michigan Avenue, the Chicago River and high -end neighborhoods, attracting the attention of buyers and families who dine in sidewalk cafes. Many have used phones to record. Activists also dragged customs agents and protection of American borders, whistles and cries.
The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, and the governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, exploded the sudden physical demonstration of force.
“While chicagoans and visitors take advantage of another magnificent Sunday, they are intimidated by masked federal agents displaying automatic weapons without apparent reason,” Johnson said in a statement.
Pritzker echoes the feeling.
“This does not make any more safe – it is a demonstration of intimidation, instilling fear in our communities and harming our businesses,” Pritzker said in a statement.
Gregory Bovino, an agent of the border patrol at the center of the immigration repression of Los Angeles, was among the agents who traveled several kilometers near the city center.
Federal officials said that the overvoltage of Chicago was intended to arrest “the worst of the worst” of the country illegally and with criminal records. Bovino told the Associated Press that the agents had made “several arrests”, but refused to give details on the question of whether the downtown patrols were intended for specific people.
“We always have a target which is here illegally,” said Bovino.
During the weekend, tension increased outside an ice building in the suburbs of BroadView at around 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Chicago. Agents on Friday, on Friday pulled chemical agents to a crowd of more than 100 demonstrators after certain groups tried to prevent a car from driving on a street towards the ice building. Poots of peppers and tear gas cartridges have entered the crowd, most of them stand far from the fence and not blocking traffic.
Protesters and journalists described similar scenes on Saturday.
The mayor of BroadView criticized the ice for the actions which, according to her, endangered local police, firefighters, residents and demonstrators. BroadView police also launched a criminal investigation into an “uninsured attack” against the vehicle of a journalist from Chicago WBBM-TV, alleging that a chemical ammunition was dismissed by immigration agents.
In previous weeks, the demonstrators also tried to prevent agents’ vehicles from entering or outside a courtyard next to the building.
Activists and family members have raised concerns in recent days that the installation intended to deal with a stops is a detention center in the grip of prey.
Trump had previously threatened to send the national guard to Chicago but has not yet followed.
Trump said that he had ordered that the deployment of 60 days of Oregon National Guard is responsible for “violent protests” that threaten the security of immigration detention and other federal goods.
He said demonstrations “constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the United States government”.
The demonstrators during recent demonstrations were counted in the dozens and focused on the area around a single ice building. Some federal agents were injured and several demonstrators were accused of assault. Some demonstrators also say they were injured.
Kotek spoke to Trump on Saturday and said the deployment was not necessary. She refused to call the troops of the Oregon National Guard and Trump therefore did so in an order to the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
“Putting our own soldiers in our streets is an abuse of power and a bad service to our communities and our soldiers,” said Kotek. “And it’s illegal. And it will make the Oregon less safe. ”
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said that he had filed a complaint before the American Oregon district court against Trump, Hegseth and others on behalf of the State and the city of Portland. He seeks an injunction blocking any deployment on the grounds that Trump does not have authority because the situation does not constitute an invasion or a rebellion or a situation where federal laws cannot be executed otherwise.
“Oregon communities are stable and our local officials have been clear: we have the capacity to manage public security without federal interference,” said Rayfield. “The sending of 200 troops from the National Guard to keep a single building is not normal. If you had a concern about security in your home, you would make some calls and combine the gaps – not call an army. ”
Trump said earlier this month that he was creating a working group of federal law enforcement organizations to combat crime in Memphis. The city has experienced a high number of violent crimes such as carjacking and homicides in recent years, but democratic and republican officials have noted that the black city mainly known this year in certain categories of crimes.
Lee, the governor, publicly said that he would not expect more than 150 members of the National Guard to be sent to Memphis, although he said that the figures were not solidified. The city said on Friday that there would be no tanks. The guard troops will not arrests and will not be armed unless the local authorities requested it, said Lee on Friday.
It is not known when the members of the guard will arrive. Lee also said that 300 Tennessee Highway Patrol soldiers will be in the region.
The Latinos in Memphis have expressed their concern that ice agents increase their presence in Memphis and hold people who are legally in the country.
On Saturday, dozens of people walked towards a place in front of the town hall to protest against the police. Speakers at a press conference said that, instead of federal troops and agents, Memphis needs more funding for education, crime prevention, youth services and hospitals.
Oregon officials made similar comments.
