8 Cool Things You Can Do With a Jailbroken Kindle

If you’ve got a compatible Kindle, there are good reasons to jailbreak it. You can prevent Amazon from removing content from the device, install books from other stores and sources, and unlock its potential in other ways. Here are some of the most interesting things you can do with a jailbroken Kindle.
Change Your eBook App
The biggest benefit to jailbreaking your Kindle is that it enables you to install and use a different eBook reader app. KOReader is the app to use, and it is a game-changer. It’s so much more powerful and capable than the standard Kindle app, and lets you move outside of Amazon’s walled garden, too.
There are too many great features in KOReader to list here, but some of the ones you might enjoy include a greater range of display options, including different layouts, more fonts, and the ability to disable hyphenation. It supports more file formats, which we’ll get to, is better at handling PDFs, has custom screensavers, and offers bags of stats to help you track your reading habits.
Installation is a little long-winded, but you can follow the instructions and grab the download from the app’s official GitHub page.
Read EPUB Files Without Conversion
One of the biggest benefits of using KOReader is that it supports far more file formats than the Kindle software. More specifically, it has native support for EPUB files.
If you get your books from other sources, maybe buying them from other stores or downloading them from legal, free eBook sites, you’ll know that you have to convert EPUB files before you can read them on your Kindle. Normally, this involves emailing them to your Kindle account. But with KOReader, you can skip that step. Just move the files onto your device, and you’re good to go.
Manage Large Book Collections With Calibre
The other thing that’s great about KOReader is that it integrates with Calibre, the amazing desktop eBook management software. Get the two apps loaded up, and you can put away your USB cable and shut down your email client.
Using the Calibre plugin, you can create a wireless connection between the eBook collection on your desktop and your Kindle, making it so much quicker and easier to transfer books back and forth as and when you need them.
Play Games
A Kindle is not really cut out for gaming. The hardware isn’t powerful enough, and the screen’s refresh rate isn’t fast enough. But since when did that stop anyone from trying? Gaming is somewhat possible on a Kindle. And, of course, where there are games, there’s Doom.
More suitable are non-graphical games like interactive fiction, some of which might also be available through the browser on a non-jailbroken device. You can get even simpler games like Wordle via a scriptlet, too.
Run Tiny Apps
What are scriptlets? They’re tiny apps that you can copy onto your Kindle, where they will show up as book covers that you can tap to launch. There aren’t all that many scriptlets available, but they can be useful. Among them are the Wordle game, one to remove ads from your jailbroken Kindle, and a flashcard app.
Show the Weather
So far, we’ve been looking at practical and fairly easy uses for a jailbroken Kindle. Want to get a bit more hands-on? There are several projects that let you turn an older, unused Kindle into a weather dashboard, showing permanent weather data for your location, and refreshing automatically.
The site TerminalBytes has a great project that’s outlined in full detail, and you can also check out the GitHub projects from matopeto and gadget1999.
Create an E-Ink Dashboard
A TRMNL device is an e-ink dashboard that can display all sorts of data—from the weather, or your shared family calendar or to-do list, to important business information and almost anything else. You don’t need to buy the hardware, though. You can also download the software and use it for a project with your own e-ink device.
A jailbroken Kindle is among the compatible e-ink devices that you can use with the software. It’s still a work in progress, but you can follow all the instructions via the usetrmnl GitHub page.
Use Your Kindle as an E-Ink Display
Finally, you can give up on the Kindle software entirely and make use of its best hardware feature, the e-ink display, on its own. There’s a proof of concept that shows how you can send text or images to the display, with more details on GitHub. The frame rate of 3.5fps isn’t at all practical, sadly.
At the time of writing, Kindles running firmware versions older than 5.18.1 can be easily jailbroken using the WinterBreak method. Those that have been updated to 5.18.3 or lower can expect a new jailbreak method by the end of 2025. Jailbreaking carries some risks, but it should be reasonably straightforward if you follow the instructions. It’s also a great way to repurpose an older model that you no longer use.
