California police pull over a self-driving Waymo for an illegal U-turn, but they can’t ticket

San Francisco – Northern California police were naturally perplexed when she stopped a Waymo taxi after making an illegal turnover, only to find no driver behind the wheel and, therefore, a ticket.
The San Bruno Police Department has written in social media publications now of the viral weekend that the police were carrying out an operation of the early Saturday morning when an autonomous waymo made the illegal turn in front of them.
The agents arrested the vehicle, but refused to write a ticket because their “quote books do not have a box for” robot “”.
“It’s true … no driver, no hands, no clue,” read the message, who was accompanied by photos of an officer looking in the car.
The agents contacted Waymo to point out what they called a “problem” and in the post, they said they hoped that reprogramming will dissuade more illegal movements.
The Department’s publication on Facebook has generated more than 500 comments, many people have indignant that the police did not last the company. People also wanted to know how the police forced the car to stop.
But the SGT of San Bruno. Scott SmithMatungol said they could only uncheck a driver or a human operator for a mobile violation, unlike parking tickets that can be left with the vehicle.
A new state law that starts next year will allow the police to report moving violations at the Ministry of Engine vehicles, which determines details, including potential sanctions, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina told Times that the company’s autonomous driving system was closely monitored by regulators. “We are examining this situation and we are committed to improving road safety thanks to our learning and our experience in progress,” said Ilina.
Waymos currently operates in Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco and in regions in the south of the city, including the suburbs of San Bruno.
“It exploded much more than we thought,” said SmithMatungol about the viral post of the Associated Press on Tuesday. “We are not a big agency like San Francisco.”
San Bruno has around 40,000 inhabitants and a sworn police force of 50 police officers, he said.
Waymo belongs to the mother company of Google, alphabet.
