Tree 1, Baldwins 0 – RedState

On top of all the monumental events of Monday, with every reason to celebrate a major Middle East peace deal, we shouldn’t be surprised to learn that not everyone had a good day. That’s to be expected, I suppose. Law of averages, and all that, you know.

Two people in particular are having a bad day: actor Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen, who crashed their Range Rover into a tree in New York. It is unclear which of the Baldwins was driving. The Range Rover appears to be a total loss.

The first answer on X was a price:

Good point. At least no one was shot this time. We should be grateful for small favors.

Fox News has more details, although we admit the information is still a little sketchy.

Actor Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen Baldwin were involved in a car accident in the Hamptons, New York, on Monday and reportedly hit a tree head-on.

TMZ first reported that the Baldwins’ Range Rover had hit a tree, and the resulting photos show the front of the SUV completely destroyed.

It was not immediately clear who was driving at the time of the crash.

One photo showed a garbage truck nearby. TMZ said it contacted the company, which claimed its driver was not at fault.

As you might expect, I have a few questions.

First: how do you hit a tree, especially one of this size? Honestly, the tree in the photo is a pretty big tree. It’s not like we can just miss seeing it. The trees are not lying in ambush, simply waiting for a few Baldwins to pass by in a Range Rover. The obvious conclusion is that whatever vehicle Baldwin was driving, it was going far too fast for the conditions.

Second: speaking of which, was Alec or Stephen driving? Did driver Baldwin take a breathalyzer test? Were there any signs of impairment? In any case, more than usual?

Third and finally: Were they cited for anything? I’m pretty sure that most people anywhere in the country who just hit a tree and wrecked their car would get at least one ticket to go along with the nasty letter from their insurance company.

We will wait for more details with a breath approaching.

I remember the story of a young woman who was arrested for driving erratically, for swerving from one side of the road to the other. When the officer approached, there was no trace or odor of alcohol and the young woman seemed bright and alert, so he asked her what was happening. “I saw this big tree in the middle of the road,” she said. “So I swerved, and then there was another tree, and when I went around that one, there was another tree, right in the road!”

The policeman looked into his car. “Ma’am,” he said, “This is your air freshener.”

I’ll be here all week.
