These 5 new Netflix movies are all you need this October – here are my top picks for the best seasonal scares

It’s October, so naturally, some big horrors have been added to Netflix’s slate of new movies. If you’re planning to host a spooky movie night, I’ve got you covered.
Although 83 movies were added to Netflix this month, I found six to help you narrow down your search and get to the point without the dreaded scrolling.
Does it look good? Read on to discover the must-see horror movies that just landed on one of the best streaming services.
The elixir
Look on it
What would the Halloween season be without zombies and suspicious elixirs? We have already seen the disaster caused by The bottom as well as the virus that rages in 28 years latersuch strange viruses and serums are still present in horror.
In The Elixir, we follow the aftermath of said elixir releasing the undead in a village. There, a family at odds must band together and fight to survive as their hometown falls apart.
This is an Indonesian language horror film, so movie buffs around the world might want to give this one a try.
Casper
Look on it
Okay, I know, this one isn’t. scary. It’s “Casper the Friendly Ghost”, not “Casper the Really Scary Ghost”, but it’s still an essential watch for the Halloween season.
If you want to rest from all the tension and jumps, Casper is iconic and you should take the time to watch it this month. The plot follows a paranormal expert brought in to exorcise ghosts from a family mansion. But when her daughter befriends Casper, a friendly ghost, everything changes.
Also fun fact, Casper is the first film to have an entirely computer-generated visual effects character in a leading role.
We have always lived in the castle
Look on it
Gothic horror fans will love it We have always lived in the castlean adaptation of the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. She also wrote the brilliant The Haunting of Hill Housewhich was adapted into a series by Mike Flanagan (also available on Netflix).
But here we follow the aftermath of a family tragedy where the Merricat sisters and Constance, as well as their uncle, live an isolated life. But when their cousin Charles arrives, he threatens to reveal a dark secret.
It’s also a great choice for fans of drama and family dynamics, as there’s a lot to unpack here.
Sinister 2
Look on it
Ignore Rotten Tomatoes’ 15% critical rating, because Sinister 2 is still a worthy watch and delivers what is widely considered one of the most effective scares of all time. Honestly, it gets to me every time.
Maybe it is Also a lot of scares for some people’s liking, but I still recommend checking this one out if you’re in the mood to be terrified.
The sequel follows Courtney, a young mother, and her sons after they move into a haunted house and experience a series of supernatural events. This will make you sleep with the lights on.
The strangers
Look on it
A few weeks ago I discovered a hidden teaser for The Strangers: Chapter 2 inside a fake tourism website. It’s a shame the movie didn’t do very well, as it was critically panned with a 14% Rotten Tomatoes score.
However, the original The strangers from 2008 is well worth your time and is one of my favorite home invasion horrors of all time. The film follows a couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) whose stay at a vacation home is disrupted by three terrifying masked intruders.
It will bring the perfect spooky vibe, but you might not want to watch it if you’re home alone.
