Watch mud volcano erupt beneath a crown of flames in Taiwan

A mud volcano broke out in life in front of a temple in Taiwan, with fascinating videos capturing the moments that the mud pulled from the ground under a crown of fire.
The Wandan mud volcano, located in the canton of Wandan in the south of Taiwan, spatted the bubbling mud of four separate vents Thursday, June 26, while the ejected material reached a height of 6.6 feet (2 meters), Formosa Television (FTV) News reported.
Images of the eruption of about 10 hours show flames that light up above the bubbling mud. However, while mud volcanoes can ignite naturally, the Wandan flames have been deliberately fixed by the local population to burn ejected methane, a greenhouse which contributes to climate change, according to Reddit Posts by Mark TingayAssociate professor of geology and auxiliary geophysics at the University of Adélaide in Australia.
“Local people ignite these vents by throwing hot rags,” said Tingay in response to a Reddit user asking for the flames. “They do it mainly to escape the gases, but in part because it looks great!”

Mud volcanoes generally have nothing to do with volcanoeswhich eject the melted rock and the hot gases. Some mud volcanoes are linked to a hot geothermal activity, such as those of Yellowstone National Park. However, the Wandan mud volcano is the most common type of this geological characteristic.
“These Taiwan mud volcanoes are driven by high fluid pressures which can form a deep underground, rather than a magmatic influence,” wrote Tingay in another commentary by Reddit.
The Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan broke out today. The eruption has lasted from ~ 5 a.m. to ~ 3:40 am. It is its 10th eruption in the past 3 years, more recently on July 6, 2024.Video graciously graceful of my friend 張寶惠, the goalkeeper of the mud volcano. pic.twitter.com/kbb1i206xdJune 26, 2025
Tingay is studying mud volcanoes and regularly shares information on raw on social networks. In his last articles, he described the Wandan event alongside a video taken by 張寶惠, the guardian of the temple of the Mud volcano. 張寶惠 Also Videos shared on Facebookshowing the mud volcano which bursts violently from different angles.
The last eruption started around 5 a.m., continued until 3:40 p.m., the Wandan Mud volcano has broken out in the past three years, according to Tingay messages.
The Wandan mud volcano is not in a single fixed location, but can break out in an area of 0.6 mile wide (1 kilometer), according to Tingay. In previous years, the volcano broke out under the temple, with mud pulling on the exterior wall and pour insidecovering the ground.
Mud volcanoes Vary in size and fitAnd in some cases, form massive Cond -shaped structures Appearance very similar to ordinary volcanoes. They can naturally produce flames when they explode rocks strike against each other, creating a spark which ignites the inflammable gases ejected.
