Breakfast burritos recalled because of Listeria; some went to schools

MCI Foods Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., is recalling 91,585 pounds of specific lots of breakfast burrito and packaging products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Some products were shipped to schools.
The individually packaged and bulk frozen breakfast burritos and wraps were produced between September 17 and October 14. A list of products subject to recall can be viewed by clicking here. Photos of the products can be found here.
The products bear the establishment number “EST. 1162A” or “P-5890A” inside the USDA inspection mark. These items were shipped to dining establishments across the country. Los Cabos, El Más Fino and Midamar brand products are included in the USDA National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
The issue was discovered when the establishment notified FSIS of a positive Listeria test result in the scrambled egg component after the company conducted routine sampling and testing of ingredients from its external suppliers.
No cases of illness due to the consumption of these products have been confirmed. However, it can take up to 70 days for symptoms of a Listeria infection to appear.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be found in institutional refrigerators or freezers. Establishments are asked not to offer these products. These products should be thrown away.
