Incineration is a common method of municipal solid waste management. Although incinerating waste generates more electricity than alternatives and reduces waste volume and the need for landfills, it also leads to dioxin pollution, heavy metal leaching, and increased greenhouse gas emissions (1). As a result, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) classifies incineration as the least preferable waste management option (2), and many countries have enacted regulatory restrictions, such as the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (3) and the US AB 1857 Amendment (4). By contrast, China continues to promote incineration (5) despite its numerous socioecological risks.
