With Just Over Year to Go in Her Term, Mich. Gov Claims She Is Not Running for POTUS in 2028

Welcome to the last week of October, which means it’s a little cold in the state of Michigan. I know this because I live here, just to make sure we’re clear on this, and I have some idea of what’s going on in the not-so-great Great Lakes State. When I don’t freeze my behind disabled.
As I was flipping through the local paper and catching up over the last couple of weeks, I learned about incumbent Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who may NOT run for a third term.
According to the local newspaper, the Detroit News…
Whitmer is in the final two years of her second term as governor and she cannot run again due to term limits. Although she is seen by many as a potential candidate, she said she is focused on her current job as governor.
The last governor we ran for a third term was Republican John Engler, and he was the strongest governor of my lifetime. However, fortunately, we won’t stand a chance for Whitmer and a third term.
Yet Gretchen continues to be mentioned in every article about who will be running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2028. This will undoubtedly increase when she officially leaves the governor’s office on January 1, 2027, a little over a year from now.
I was on a thread earlier this year or late last year that was debating whether or not Whitmer would run, and they thought she would do the opposite of what one of the previous governors of the state of Michigan would do – her predecessor, Jennifer Granholm.
The only issue I raised in the thread at the time (because I’m a nerd) was that Granholm was never eligible to run for president because she was actually born in Canada, not the good old United States of America.
(Insert sad music)
The good old American Constitution prohibits foreigners from becoming president by requiring that a president be a natural-born citizen. This requirement, found in Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution, means that a person who was not a U.S. citizen at birth and later acquired citizenship through naturalization is not eligible to serve as president. Sorry, Jenny from the Canadian bloc.
Back to Gretch and what she does…
She says she’s not sure she really wants to run for president. With other Democrats making noise about POTUS, about how they CAN If you want to explore the possibility of running, Gretchen may think the field is already too crowded. Luckily, my colleague Ward Clark covered this story here: Gavin Newsom is now “watching” the 2028 presidential campaign.
“I don’t know if I should be the main character in the next chapter, but I want to be a part of writing it,” she said. “And I think I have an important perspective as the governor of an important swing state.”

Even if Whitmer wanted to, the fact that she sometimes agreed with Trump and felt free to reach out to the administration and communicate in the way she did, would (probably) not sit well with die-hard leftists in the Democratic Party now.
So she must have thrown a wrench somewhere, and luckily it was found later in said article.
Whitmer also issued a grim warning about Michigan’s economy, which is deeply tied to the auto sector. Parts are often shipped across the Canada-US border multiple times during the manufacturing process, resulting in multiple customs duty payments. Whitmer said consumers are feeling the ripple effects on mortgage payments, grocery bills and retirement savings.
“This is truly a disastrous time for manufacturing,” she said.
Whitmer had other points to discuss with Trump. She rejected Trump’s recent claims that the violence came from left-wing policies, drawing on her own experience with political violence. She suggested Trump could seek an unconstitutional third term, but she believes the law will prevent him from doing so. And although vague, she came out in favor of the freedom to disagree peacefully.
Whitmer is not wrong in saying that Michigan’s economy is tied to the auto industry. With General Motors announcing additional layoffs a few days ago, it’s making us a little nervous here in Michigan, even though the country’s overall economy is doing well.
However, what would help this state more than anything is to have a business-friendly governor in Lansing in January 2027. Let’s hope that happens.
Editor’s note: Schumer’s closure is here. Rather than putting the American people first, Chuck Schumer and radical Democrats forced a government shutdown on health care for illegal immigrants. They own that.
