Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) announced she was enacting a “limited juvenile curfew” for the city, which would be in effect until November 5, due to “weeks of disorderly behavior by juveniles.”

In a job on Bowser’s announcement came after hundreds of teenagers in the District of Columbia’s Navy Yard neighborhood were involved in an altercation Friday and were seen blocking streets.

“We are declaring a limited curfew for minors in Washington, DC,” Bowser said. “As of today, all minors under the age of 18 are subject to a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., which will extend until November 5.”

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said juveniles began gathering near the Navy Yard subway station around 7:30 p.m., and a half-hour later there were “several hundred people,” Fox5DC reported. MPD also said the gathering of teens “started peacefully but quickly escalated as fighting broke out and groups began disrupting traffic.” »:

Police said the rally began peacefully but quickly escalated as fighting broke out and groups began disrupting traffic and refusing orders to stay on sidewalks. Other MPD officers and partner agencies – including Metro Transit Police, U.S. Capitol Police, the National Guard and members of a federal task force – responded to help restore order.

Around 11 p.m., the police allegedly cleared the park and directed numerous minors towards the metro station. MPD maintained a heavy presence overnight to prevent further disruption.

Four teenagers from the District of Columbia and an 18-year-old from Maryland were arrested following the incident, MPD said.

In a press release, MPD Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said “the behavior displayed last night at the Navy Yard is unacceptable,” adding that MPD’s “law enforcement partners” would benefit from an increased presence order to prevent another similar incident from occurring.

“The behavior displayed last night at the Navy Yard is unacceptable, and MPD and our law enforcement partners will have an increased presence tonight to ensure this does not happen again,” Smith said. “This group chose not to visit any of the events hosted by MPD or our DC partner agencies and instead came together in this manner.”
