How to choose a good office chair

If you’re completely lost when it comes to buying office chairs this Black Friday, we have a complete guide on how to choose the best office chair.

However, if you just need a quick overview of the features and specs to look out for before committing to a Black Friday deal, we’ve got you covered.

Design

There are two main options here: mid-back and high-back chairs. Mid-back models support the lower back up to the shoulders and provide greater freedom of movement, while high-back chairs provide full support of the spine, including the neck and shoulders, with greater restriction of movement.

The latter is often recommended for those who sit at a desk all day.

Material

Fabric or mesh are your two main options, and we often recommend mesh to Australians because they offer both firm support and breathability. Fabric, on the other hand, offers soft, cushioned comfort, but it can potentially sweat a bit in warmer, more humid climates.

You’ll also likely see deals on faux leather (sometimes called PU leather or faux leather) office chairs, but we’d prefer fabric and mesh.

Lumbar support

The fixed lumbar support stays in a single, rigid position – essentially a one-size-fits-all support, ideal for people of average height. The adjustable lumbar support, as the name suggests, can be raised and lowered (or moved back and forth) to better suit the shape of your back. This means it offers a suitable fit for a wider range of body types and shapes. Finally, dynamic lumbar support is the best choice because it provides continuous support as you move around in your seat.

Ultra cheap office chairs often have no lumbar support at all and, in our opinion, these are best avoided – which is why all Steelcase office chairs come with some type of lumbar support.

Armrests

Most office chair offerings have 2D, 3D, or 4D armrests – this determines the number of directions the armrests can be tilted (up, down, back, forward, inward, outward).

Adjustments

Perhaps the most important feature to look for when looking for a tailored fit alongside lumbar, a good office chair will also offer the ability to adjust the height and depth of the seat to ensure you are seated correctly. Don’t assume that locking tilt and recline are included – always check the specifications. Also be sure to check that the headrest, if included, can also be adjusted or tilted for better neck support.
