Nancy Pelosi retires after transforming Democrats into socialist party

The year was 1987 and the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives was a moderate Texan named Jim Wright, the Senate Majority Leader was Robert Byrd of West Virginia, and socialism was a dirty word in the party of Jefferson and Jackson.

It was the year San Francisco’s Nancy Pelosi began her congressional career, and when it comes to her and her Democratic Party, we can surely say: You’ve come a long way, baby.

Former Speaker Pelosi announced this week that she would not seek a 900th term or anything in the House, and at 85, she is leaving a Democratic Party that has almost fully embraced socialism. This is undoubtedly the main reason.

Last month, under growing pressure from the left, Pelosi’s chosen successor to hold the House gavel, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., endorsed a staunch socialist to become mayor of his hometown of New York in what looked like a hostage video.

Many observers, including myself, have concluded that the Democrats have created a socialist monster that is now devouring them, but in Pelosi’s case the situation may be a little different. She might get the socialism she wanted all along, just faster than expected.

When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and her team of Blame America socialists stormed the House in 2019, Pelosi did nothing to suggest that their Marxism was out of step with the party. Instead, she appeared on magazine covers with them.

Pelosi is highly praised by both parties for her ability to run her conference with an iron fist and tolerate no quarter in opposition, but in practice this has clearly alienated moderate Democrats. In the case of New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew, he became a Republican.

The two most important Democrats of their generation are former President Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. Both have famous photos as teenagers with party icon President John F. Kennedy, and each has a very different relationship with his legacy.

It was Clinton, the last of the Southern Democrats, who in 1992 rescued a party that had lost touch with the nation by adopting the (then far-left) policies of Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis.

To see where Pelosi, her party, her nation, and her district have ended up under her leadership, one need only look further than her likely successor, trans activist and socialist senator Scott Wiener, who has argued that the sex offender registry should be reduced or eliminated because, for whatever reason, trans people disproportionately land on it.

In short, it’s today’s Democratic Socialist Party: Wiener basically says, “Sorry, we’d like to protect your children, but it might offend that guy in the robe.” »

The socialist wave is spreading from coast to coast as progressive Democrats rally around Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York.

This is Nancy Pelosi’s legacy.

Despite the nascent and hopeful efforts of San Francisco’s somewhat sane Mayor Daniel Lurie, Pelosi’s hometown has descended into a shameful spectacle of disorder, particularly because of democratic socialist policies like cashless bail, light policing, and ignoring public vagrancy and drug abuse.

Pelosi presided over one of the greatest leftward drifts of any party anywhere during her tenure. When she first took up the gavel in 2007, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama was still opposed to same-sex marriage (or at least said he was) because of his deep Christian beliefs. No Democrat in Congress holds such beliefs today.

No, Pelosi is not a victim of the socialist coup that toppled the Democrats. Andrew Cuomo is, and Sen. Chuck Schumer certainly looks like one. But not Pelosi. Do you really think she opposes free buses or government grocery stores?

No, laughing-faced Nancy wanted this all along and it seems the last laugh really belongs to her.
