Texas truck crash kills four members of the same Fort Worth family

Four members of the McKellar family of Fort Worth were killed, and one remains in critical condition, after the DPS of Texas said that a large rigging driver fell asleep on the wheel on Saturday afternoon in the county of Kaufman and collided with the circulated traffic.
Say relatives say that Kason McKellar, 15 ,, his sister Evan, their parents Shaun and Zabar, and the grandfather Billy McKellar led to the I-20 when the accident occurred. Only Evan has survived, transported to the hospital where she still fights for her life.
In total, five people were killed, including the driver of another vehicle, who has now been identified as Nicole Gregory, 49, from Dallas.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, Alexis Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, was arrested and accused of five manifolded manslaughter and an aggravated chief of aggression with a deadly weapon.
The authorities released the identity of the five victims killed in the accident on Tuesday evening. A lawyer representing the McKellar family said those relatives were in mourning.
“Obviously, speaking to one of the family members earlier, it is a terrible tragedy, with the number of people lost in all this family, with a person who has trouble staying alive,” said John Nohinek, director of Witherite Law Group.
“We represent the father of the mother who was killed in this wreckage,” said Nohinek. “He also lost a little child and he has a little child who clings to his life.”
Nohinek said he met the family on Tuesday morning and said he had discovered less than 24 hours ago on the four members of the killed family and an adult granddaughter who stays in the hospital. Nohinek said the family returned from a trip to Eastern Texas.
“Our objective as a lawyer turns to the test to locate the source, from a legal point of view of the wreckage,” said Nohinek.
He said that each semi-trailer tractor had a “black box” like a plane. He said that the electronic control modules and other devices can show the speed of the truck at the time of the accident, if it was in cruise control, how long the truck was on the road, the maintenance history and many other details.
“While the family cries, we work to make sure we get this information as soon as possible. This is very important information to get an idea of what was going on inside this vehicle at the time, “said Nohinek.
Monday, DPS named Hope Trans LLC as the company operating the Big Rig. Data from the Ministry of US Transport shows that company trucks have a much higher percentage of non-service than the national average of trucking companies.
“In 2024, this carrier underwent 146 inspections on the side of the road, and they underwent 159 violations. Their trucks were tried out of service at a rate of 33.8%, which is more than 10% higher than the national average. This kind of watch to what type of business we process,” said Nohinek.
NBC 5 tried to reach out to the company on Monday and left a message.
Nohinek said their law firm was asking for access to the “black box”, but said he could take more time to see the data due to the investigation.
“They must get all the necessary information before letting civilians, lawyers, said,” he said.
NBC 5 spoke with several family members and their relatives who have said at the moment, they are not ready to speak.
“Obviously, the family is distraught,” said Nohinek. “By chatting with them earlier in the day at home, they have trouble with that.”
A GoFundme for the Family account was created to help the Northern Texas family.
The loss was strongly felt by the sports program for young people from Hallmark Eagles to Fort Worth, where the McKellar family was involved for years and Kason began playing football at 11.
“Whenever something like it happens, it’s quite serious if it’s a person,” said Newton Braziel with Hallmark Eagles. “But when it’s a family, guy, your heart can’t help but get out.”
The program indicates to NBC 5 that he works to set up a way for his community to support the McKellar family following the tragedy.
“His loss has touched many families, many friends,” said coach Anthony Bartee about Kason. “When my son told me about it last night, it really broke my morale.”
DPS said on Monday that a sixth person died and that the five people of the Ford F-150 mutilated died, but on Tuesday the authorities said that only five victims died in the accident.
