Joe Scarborough Spends Over 2 Minutes Declaring Democrats Won Government Shutdown

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough spent more than two and a half minutes of Monday’s “Morning Joe” episode arguing that the government shutdown was a victory for the Democratic Party.
Seven Democratic senators and one independent joined all Senate Republicans except Rand Paul of Kentucky to pass a continuing compromise resolution to fund the government through Jan. 30, 2026, and includes three full-year appropriations bills, ensuring that the Department of Agriculture, Department of Veterans Affairs and legislative operations are fully funded for the next fiscal year. Scarborough claimed that during the 40-day shutdown, Democrats proved that Republicans didn’t care about “working people.” (RELATED: John Kennedy Responds to Chuck Schumer’s New Demands to Reopen the Government Like Only He Can)
“What did they do? They found out and exposed the White House for working overtime to give tax cuts to billionaires,” Scarborough told “Morning Joe” co-host Jonathan Lemire. “At the same time, they’re working overtime to get instant help, to get food aid to working Americans, which shows how much the Republican Party hates the idea of helping working Americans, helping middle-class Americans who are struggling with health care.”

“So you take that and you take the massive victory that Democrats had last week, massive, historic in some ways, where Steve Bannon said Democrats erased 10 years of Republican gains overnight,” Scarborough continued. “And why did this happen? Donald Trump said it happened because of the government shutdown.”
Democrats won high-profile elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York on Tuesday, while passing a highly partisan congressional map in California on Tuesday.
“I wish the Democrats, for once, just once, could get a victory and then understand the Republicans. They were never going to help American workers. They learned that through this process. So you know who else learned that through this process? The American voter,” Scarborough said. “Donald Trump has been denounced, and the administration and the Republicans have been denounced as the party that has fought like hell to give tax cuts to billionaires, to multinational corporations, to the richest of the rich. And we learned last week that they are trying to extend those tax cuts to even more billionaires, to give them even bigger tax cuts.”
“At the same time, they were fighting like hell to keep American workers from receiving basic food assistance and just a helping hand, just a little helping hand to cover our health care costs,” Scarborough continued. “So, yes, the government shutdown will end. But the reality of what this Republican Party stands for today, the reality of what Donald Trump fought for last week, will stay with voters for years to come.” (RELATED: ‘Terrible Night’: Scott Jennings Warns Democrats’ Election Rout Has Come at a Cost to the Party’s Long-Term ‘Image’)
Democrats’ initial demands for support for a continuing resolution that would end the government shutdown, now the longest in history, involved restoring more than $1 trillion in funding for various priorities, including increased Obamacare subsidies passed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
