An Evanston woman was killed Sunday evening when an SUV struck her car on Grand Avenue in Gurnee in what appears to have been a weather-related accident, police said Monday.

The identity of the woman, aged 29, has not yet been released.

She was driving east on Grand Avenue around 8:54 p.m. in a Ford Focus when her car collided with a westbound SUV that had crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lanes. The collision forced the Focus into a ditch, police said.

The passengers, a Waukegan woman and her two children, a 5-year-old boy and an eight-month-old girl, were taken to the hospital with injuries. Their conditions were not available Monday.

Police said the SUV, a Chevrolet Suburban, was heading west on Grand Avenue when the driver attempted to change lanes and likely struck an icy patch. The driver was unable to control the vehicle before it crossed into the oncoming lane, police said.

The driver of the Suburban and his passenger were not injured. A third vehicle, an SUV traveling east, suffered a flat tire, but none of the occupants were injured, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
