As you can clearly see, air fryer grilled cheese leaves little mess after preparation.
An air fryer is essentially a small convection oven with non-stick surfaces, which circulates hot air around whatever you put in its basket. Unlike your sauté pan or skillet, it cooks in all directions at once and usually in less time. Unlike your oven, it’s compact and efficient, heats up quickly and doesn’t even require preheating.
Your toaster oven could never do this. While grid cheese is a possibility (and pizza reheated in the toaster oven is a revelation), grid cheese is not. Your toaster oven isn’t designed to trap grease under whatever you’re cooking and you’ll end up with a mess that’s too complicated to clean.

How to Make Grilled Cheese in the Air Fryer

For a basic grilled cheese, you can assemble the sandwich in the basket of your air fryer: bread buttered side down, followed by sliced or shredded cheese, then topped with the final slice buttered side up.
Whether it’s a simple sandwich or a more sophisticated combination of cheese, bread and toppings, the air fryer prepares crispy, gooey grilled cheese in minutes.
Set the heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook 3 to 6 minutes on each side, flipping halfway through cooking. The already melted cheese will keep your sandwich together while flipping. You can get a lightly browned grilled cheese in less time, but I recommend holding 5 to 6 minutes for a deeply crispy sandwich.

The Air Fryer Is Even Better for Stacked Grilled Cheese
Add a fruit and charcuterie element for a more sophisticated air fryer.
This is where the air fryer really shines in the grilled cheese department. Every element of an upgraded grilled cheese adds a degree of difficulty when cooking in a pan, much of which is mitigated within the safe confines of an air fryer. Thicker bread. Thicker cheese, like chunks of Camembert or Brie.
And think about all the great grilled cheese ingredients that can be slippery: apple slices, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, pickles, etc. Any grilled cheese with more than two components can be difficult to flip gracefully in a pan, even for skilled cooks.
Pack a loaf of good bread and stuff your sandwich with premium cheese.
To prove my point, I assembled a fancy grilled cheese with slices of Camembert, prosciutto, and apple. (Plus mayonnaise on the outside, because I was fancy, and mayonnaise gives your sandwich a little extra tang.) Because of its height, I assembled it entirely on the outside of the air fryer, then carefully placed it in the drawer.
And there you have it!
After 6 minutes of cooking in the air fryer, the flip went smoothly and the sophisticated result belied the fact that you spent a minute putting the masterpiece together. The exterior of the ham even got a little crunchy bonus. So the air fryer invites you to go to town with everything you can dream of for your grilled cheese: cured or cooked ground meats, grilled vegetables, various sauces and condiments, the choice is yours. An epic grilled cheese variation is only limited by the limits of your imagination.
Should I preheat an air fryer for grilled cheese?
A grilled cheese is a quick-cooking sandwich no matter how you make it, so you don’t want to add extra minutes for something that only takes a few minutes to accomplish. That said, while preheating your air fryer can be a waste of time for some preparations, I think turning it on for just a minute to warm up the nonstick surface the sandwich sits on is worth it to get that golden crust working right away.
Are there any downsides to making grilled cheese in the air fryer?
Depending on your model and size of air fryer, as well as the shape of the bread you choose, it can be difficult to make more than two sandwiches at a time, so it may not be the most family-friendly method for making grilled cheese. But for a solo meal or a date night, your air fryer is the grilled cheese hack you didn’t know you needed.
