Dbrand did the trick: it announced a Portal Skin Companion Cube for Valve’s new Steam Machine, allowing you to turn the new PC/console hybrid into a facsimile of gaming’s most loyal companion.

The Companion Cube skin is a limited edition and will be released sometime in 2026, although we don’t know if it will launch alongside the Steam Machine itself, which is aiming for early 2026. There’s no pricing yet either.

Adam Ijaz, CEO of Dbrand, said The edge that the Cube is a shell that attaches to the chassis of the Steam Machine and that it was designed not to block any air intakes or the rear exhaust. The design is, however, still being refined to work around the console ports.

Ijaz says Dbrand is also developing GameCube and Minecraft block skins for hardware, which he calls “an exceptional canvas for creativity.”

However, the Companion Cube was always going to come first – even Valve knew that. “I’m sure someone will make it a Companion Cube, but we haven’t,” Valve engineer Steve Cardinali told my colleague Sean Hollister when he got hands-on with the Steam Engine. Valve didn’t do it, Dbrand did.
