34 Short Nail Ideas to Try for Your Next Manicure

With so many different nail shapes out there, how do you choose the best one for your short nails? Round, almond, square, and squoval work well on short nails. Stiletto and coffin nails are better suited for longer acrylics or extensions, so save those shapes for when you want to try long nails.
“Rounded nails follow the natural curve of the fingertip, creating a soft and subtle shape,” says Juli Russell, a manicurist and DIY nail expert for Sally Beauty. “This shape is ideal for short- to medium-length nails, and best suited for longer fingers or those with heavy-hand-labor lifestyles. It’s the strongest, and grows out well.”
Square nails are a little higher maintenance, but are also “ideal for short- and medium-length nails, and long if you’re going for a ’90s aesthetic,” says Russell. “Sharp corners can be prone to breaking so not advised for heavy-hand-labor lifestyles. They also require weekly reshaping as nails grow out.”
