A suspect was killed and an NYPD officer was shot in the face, apparently following an argument between neighbors.

Authorities said the suspect opened fire on police responding to a homicide in Brooklyn Monday morning.

It happened on Thomas S Boyland Street just before 6am.

Police were called to the building and found Leroy Wallace, 41, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

It is believed he was shot in the lobby and then fell to the sidewalk where he died.

At 7:45 a.m., officers approached a first-floor apartment where the suspect opened the door and shot at officers. Officer Sherjeel Worris, 25, was shot with pellets from a shotgun.

The police returned fire and hit the suspect.

Worris was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital in the back of a police car, a few blocks from the scene of the shooting, in stable condition.

He was able to speak to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch who said the officer was in “good spirits” at the hospital.

“He almost lost his life,” said Patrick Hendry, president of the New York PBA.

Worris walked out of the hospital at noon to applause from his fellow officers.

The suspect was believed to be barricaded inside the apartment. Officers then used a drone to determine the suspect had died from a gunshot wound and saw his shotgun lying next to him.

Authorities say the suspect had no criminal history.

The building official said the men had both lived in the building for a few years. He said he never had any problems with them and was not aware of any conflict between them.

Two other police officers were treated for injuries after being involved in a crash near the scene. They are expected to recover.

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani commented on the shooting on social media:
