Will Los Angeles Be the Latest City to Elect a Democratic Socialist Mayor? Karen Bass Gets a Challenger – RedState

Who would have believed it? We now have two democratic socialists who won their mayoral elections in major American cities – Zohran Mamdani in New York, of course, and the inexperienced Katie Wilson in Seattle. Both cities have already suffered greatly at the hands of “progressive” politicians, and the only question here is how far they can sink.

Could Los Angeles be the next to throw its city into the hands of radical leftists? One could argue that they’ve already done this with Mayor Karen Bass and their radical city council and county board of supervisors, but what if they went further?

Now they’ll get their chance, as community organizer Rae Huang throws her hat into the ring to challenge Bass, a Democrat who was in Ghana — despite warnings about dangerous fire conditions — when the massive January fires that ravaged large swaths of the city broke out. Since then, little reconstruction has been accomplished under his tenure.

But here is Huang:

Like Mamdani and Wilson, Huang offers many “free” things:

“I am thrilled and very honored to announce that I am running for mayor of Los Angeles, the second largest city in our country,” Huang wrote on her Instagram account on Saturday. “After more than 20 years of building on my calling to serve God through social justice work and organizing, this path led me, in these uncertain times, to take the unusual path of pursuing my calling by running for mayor to finally see through the changes that the Los Angeles social justice movement and I have been building for years.”

The 43-year-old community organizer and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) wrote that her campaign would focus on universal housing, free transportation, climate resilience and affordability, issues that resemble New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s initial campaign.

The Los Angeles Times called her “virtually unknown” and a “long chance” of winning. In the past, I would have agreed and said it had no chance of snowballing into a furnace, but that was before Seattle and New York lost their collective spirit and elected socialists to run their bankrupt metropolises. And even if Huang doesn’t win, she could make life more difficult for the ineffective Bass:

Still, Huang could complicate Bass’s re-election bid by playing a spoilsport role, alienating voters from the center-left in a year when the incumbent faces criticism over her handling of the Palisades fire, a struggling city budget and less-than-optimal public services.

Bass already has a challenger in former Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent Austin Beutnerwhich attacked its record in each of these areas. And we still don’t know if the billionaire developer Rick Carusowho lost to Bass in 2022, will enter the race.

Additionally, several DSA City Council candidates have already succeeded in getting elected, and DSA-LA is working hard to register more and more candidates on the ballot in the future. As I said in my article about Seattle’s Katie Wilson, “What Could Go Wrong?” »

Perhaps a better question would be: “What could possibly be going on?” »
