Hakeem Jeffries Takes Hard ‘L’ After Yet Another ‘Dems in Disarray’ Moment Plays Out on House Floor – RedState

We told you last Thursday the story of the tense drama of disarrayed Democrats that played out in the House shortly before the vote on whether to end Schumer’s shutdown began Wednesday night.
In a move that angered some House Democrats, including Minority Whip Katherine Clark (MA-05), Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) introduced a privilege resolution calling on the House to condemn Democratic Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) for essentially rigging the system to ensure that his chief of staff, Patty Garcia (no relation), succeeds him at the end of this term, which will be his last in Congress.
In a nutshell, on October 27, Garcia filed for re-election. However, just minutes before the November 3 nomination deadline expired, Patty Garcia also filed to run, sparking rumors that Rep. Garcia had abruptly decided not to run for re-election, which he confirmed shortly afterward, citing health and family issues. This ensured that Patty Garcia had no opponent in the primary or general election, a classic “Chicago Way” moment if ever there was one.

On Monday, a vote took place on the tabling of the resolution (the text of which you can read below):

Before the vote, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) made a strong case for filing it, predictably calling it a diversion and saying the American people’s priorities lay elsewhere and not the democracy that Democrats have spent the last five years claiming was in “danger.”

Jeffries, of course, wasn’t the only Democrat who tried to invoke Democratic privilege to defend Garcia:
All members of the Democratic caucus then stood up and condemned PEREZ for introducing the resolution – not Garcia for corruptly choosing his successor.
However, Jeffries and the lopsided House Democrats were unsuccessful. The filing motion was defeated, with two Democrats, Gluesenkamp Perez and Rep. Jared Golden (ME-02), joining the Republicans:
It’s hilarious, but know that all but two House Democrats were willing to vote against convicting Chuy Garcia for ensuring his chief of staff would be the only person on the ballot to replace him. pic.twitter.com/1hvYtvEd3p

Rep. Garcia’s office argued that other potential candidates were free to run at any time between Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, but as NBC News’ Chicago affiliate pointed out, “other Democrats have since said they might have run for Garcia’s congressional seat if they knew he wasn’t seeking re-election.”
The House could take the final vote on this subject as early as Tuesday. Stay tuned.
