Raging Trump Spirals Further as Push to Jail Enemies Backfires Badly

This weekend, President Trump became angry over a video from Democrats warning against carrying out “unlawful orders.” That led him to ask his defense secretary to open an investigation into one of those Democrats, senator and former Navy captain Mark Kelly. But things continued to go downhill for Trump when a judge threw out his corruption charges against James Comey and Letitia James. The decision—that his appointment of a stooge U.S. attorney was illegal—shows that his sloppy targeting of enemies is what backfired on him. In all these stories, Trump is using the system as a corrupt weapon to take revenge on his enemies for corrupt purposes, and it is failing for him. We spoke to David Kurtz, who covers legal issues for The excellent Morning Memo newsletter from Talking Points Memo. We discuss how Trump’s corruption is blowing up in his face, how the failed lawsuits are linked to his vile efforts to get revenge on Kelly, and why we’ll need another reform effort on a post-Watergate scale to save the system once this is all over.
